Thermal tapes with protection class IP68. Suitable for light in the bath

    Friends, two times Ku! We are often asked how to make the light in the bath. Among the LED lamps and lamps with the desired temperature, we have not yet managed to find a suitable option. But tapes for these purposes exist. Let's see what they are, and also test their main lighting characteristics: color rendering index - CRI, color temperature.

    About assembly

    Ribbons are delivered in such brilliant packages. With a minimal set of information.

    The tapes are inside the silicone case, but flexible. Enough volume. Silicone homogeneous throughout, no marriage was observed.

    Included are stubs in case you want to shorten the tape.

    And there is also a manual.

    Outwardly, all the tapes look the same. Therefore, we proceed directly to the tests.

    Light characteristics

    To measure the light characteristics, we will use the UPRtek MF250N spectrometer-pulse meter. Measurement

    capabilities:

    • Spectrum graph;
    • Ripple index;
    • The percentage of pulsations;
    • Illumination (LUX);
    • Colour temperature;
    • CRI (Ra) color rendition index.

    Tapes differ only in light temperature and color rendering index.

    miracle did not happen. Ribbons do not have good color rendering. In general, tapes have trouble with this. This problem can be found in one of our past articles:

    What's wrong with LED strips?

    The tapes have a strange variation in power. But it is good that the power consumption is higher than stated. Also tapes shine with a warmer light than stated.

    Water treatment

    The tapes have IP68 protection class. The first number indicates that the tape is completely protected from dust. But the second digit is not so clear. Some reference books say: IP68 - Requirements for equipment subject to weathering. Equipment with degree of protection IP68 is allowed to be immersed in water, the depth of immersion is indicated additionally. On the packaging about the depth does not say anything.

    But judging by the pictures from the supplier, the tape can highlight pools a couple of meters deep.

    I did not think for a long time how to test the tape. Just threw in hot water in the bath for half an hour.

    And then poured boiling water from the teapot. Tape bullying endured.

    Links to the video will add a little later. They are in processing.

    What is the result?

    As a result, tapes are suitable for lighting in the bath / sauna / pool or any other damp and hot room.

    Sadness: low color rendering index. But so far this is the problem with most tapes.

    Pleases: the tested power is higher than stated. This is good.

    As correctly noted, I did not talk about how the thermal tape is made. To do this, refer to the description from the supplier.

    Description of the features of this type of thermal tape.

    1. The tape consists of a separate double thickened substrate made of copper, which maximizes the heat transfer from the LEDs to the silicone substrate.

    2. The tape is packed in a thick-walled silicone tube, which has a special profile, which ensures reliable fastening of this tape inside the silicone tube and a snug fit to the base. Also constructive tube provides a small gap between the LEDs and the silicone tube, which together with the poor thermal conductivity of silicone ensures minimal dependence of the temperature of the LEDs from the ambient temperature.

    3. The tape is made on the basis of 2835 LEDs, 180 pieces per meter. For example, in a 17W lux ribbon, similar LEDs are used in the amount of 168 pcs / m. This lux tape consumes about 11.2W. This happens due to the fact that resistors are installed in the tape, which limit the current to the LED, so that the LED does not work at the maximum permissible power, as it does in open tapes. Losing brightness, we gain in reliability - weak heating of the tape inside the tube provides its normal temperature conditions. The luminous flux of the 1st meter of the tape after the silicone shell is about 1000 Lm (For comparison, the Luxury DesignLed tape 14.4m - 1100-1150Lm, the Designed luxury tape 17W / m - 1500Lm).

    The manufacturer of the tape is declared as an LED strip for Bath / Sauna (operating temperature up to +100 degrees).
