HabrHabr collective mind chose the best games of all time for 2013

This post summarizes the attempt to determine the best games of all time according to Habrahabr for 2013.

The selection was carried out according to simple rules:

    - In this post, everyone wanted to contribute their favorite game,
    - Every other person voted for their favorite game.

Thus, the community acted as an expert committee to determine the best games, and an electorate for voting. And this is what we got.

    The main results

In total, more than 1,800 comments gathered in a post in 5 days. Games were indicated about 400. Scored more than 20 votes 121 games. When calculating, only pluses were taken into account (I did not count the minuses, because we chose what we liked). So, meet the top ten:

    Old games

Well, and can not but rejoice the old games released before the 90s and early 90s, before the boom of computer games. It is somewhat surprising that Packman did not get on the lists, but what is there, that is:
    1. X-COM UFO Defense (110)
    2. Elite (103)
    3. Tetris (81)

    18. Alley Cat (24)

A bit about the principles of selection

The complaints about the method of calculation are mainly as follows:

    - Why are some games that are essentially different, like Dunes 1, Dunes 2 and Dunes 2000, exposed as one Dune game?
    - Why are the votes not counted when the same game is mentioned in different comments?

I deliberately refused to divide the game into versions, although I understand that games can actually be completely different. Just because there are so many.

It is also not entirely fair to count the votes scattered in different comments, because for sure the same habrayuzer will vote for your favorite game twice (or even three times). He took the votes from the commentary, where they are most.

I was also reproached for the pathos of the name: "of all times and peoples." I want to say that I didn’t want to bring any pathos. It’s just so briefly described that we choose games of all time, not old or new. And everyone participates in the selection and voting, and not just game or development specialists.

    Additional Voting

Twice they wrote to me in PM with a proposal to arrange another additional vote on the best games. The goal is to obtain objectivity. Then in this post this idea was repeated several more times in the comments.

I have a feeling that many habrayuzers are just offended that their favorite games did not get first places. They perceive the survey not as new to them information about popular games, but as a sporting event. And the low place of a game is perceived as a personal defeat.

This is not true. A poll of the habrasociety about their favorite games is just a poll, and not some kind of competition. And “objectivity” is by no means the main goal. The main goal is information.

    The overall result

In my opinion, the experiment was a success. Almost 2000 comments. Around the popular games, small discussions were created. Many illustrations and videos about games. A lot of emotional reviews, most of them warm-tube. You can warm your hands right.

Personally, I played only 22 out of 121 games, and only heard about a dozen. That is, about 90 games I did not know, but they deserve attention.

The selection format, in my opinion, is successful. You will not only find out that there is such a game, but also learn about it, share reviews, see screenshots. Of course, not everyone can handle almost 2,000 comments, but those who really love games gathered in a post.

    Thanks to the collective mind

I want to say thanks to everyone who participated in the discussion, in the vote. I also want to thank those who wrote to me in PM with suggestions and with indications of errors. And, of course, I cannot imagine any other resource where such an experiment would be possible, except for Habr.

    Additional voting is open

Shultc held an additional vote on the basis of this post . The results are not much, but they differ. First place went to Half Life.

ID_Daemon wrote a post about the first computer game Star Trek , which was played in the mid-80s.
