Firefox 17 and Firefox 17 ESR Release

After the release of Firefox for Android, the official release for desktops was released. What's new in this version:

• Notification Center support in Mac OS X 10.8;
• Vulnerable versions of plugins are no longer loaded by default and are activated only with the permission of the user using the "click-to-play" function. More details can be found here and here ;
• About 20 performance optimizations introduced. Also improved the work of the New Tab (New Tab);
• Implementation of the Social API , which allows integrating services for working with social networks (for example, Facebook ) into the browser ;
• Enlarged icons in the Smart address bar (Awesome Bar);
• Added support for the " sandbox " attribute for iframes, including additional isolation elements for content embedded via iframes;
• Support for at-rule @supports to test support for specific CSS properties and values. At the moment, @supports support is experimental and to activate it in about: config , find the layout.css.supports-rule.enabled parameter and set it to true ;
• Fixed a bug with min-height / max-height associated with box-sizing;
• SVG support for the FillPaint and StrokePaint attributes;
• Added iterable support for JavaScript Maps and Sets ;
• Accelerated and simplified work with the Web console, Debugger and the Development panel;
• A new markup panel has been added to Inspector (Ctrl + Shift + I), which simplifies editing the DOM;
• Added support for Pointer lock in web applications;
• Fixed page scrolling on sites with fixed headers.

It also becomes available for download and Firefox 17 ESR - release with a long period of support . Updates for this version of Firefox will be released every year every 6 weeks and will only include fixing serious security and stability issues.
The version of Firefox 10 ESR will be supported until February 19, 2013 - after this date the browser will be automatically updated for all users of the version of Firefox 10 ESR.

Post scriptum

The next release of Firefox 18 will be released five days later ( January 6, 2013 ) than previously planned (according to the 6-week development cycle, it was due out on January 1). The change in schedule is due to "the desire to have a weekend for developers who can devote more time to the family, instead of releasing a release on Christmas week."
