Nokia Case (full version)

Honestly, I didn’t want to write anything before the iPhone5 premiere, so that after it I could express all my thoughts and aspirations about the trends in the it industry, taking into account the news shown at the IFA in Berlin, and the presentation of Nokia, Motorola, and Amazon Kindle , and unexpectedly announced on September 8, the party of the breakaway company recently from Nokia Jolla, well, and the premiere of new apple products, finally. By the way, this autumn gadget harvest will not end there, but the main players will report and it will already be possible to imagine what technologies we will live with next year.

But what started on social networks and tech blogs after the presentation of the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 made me break my vow. I really didn’t understand something! Too clearly, deliberately and with prejudice, everyone began to attack Nokia, once again burying the lion, trying to climb the pedestal, from which he had already descended. And this despite the fact that the products presented by the Finnish giant, at least one of them, the flagship, Lumia 920, is very, very good. In any case, as much as you can generally judge a device by descriptions and characteristics, rather than testing it live.

Let's imagine that on September 12, Apple will present iPhone5 with:
    1) wireless charging, and will outline its plans for equipping urban public institutions with such charges
    2) support for LTE (which will generally be taken for granted and will not be mentioned at all at the presentation)
    3) innovative technology for photo, video and sound recordings that (without exaggeration !!!) turn reality into a movie (on in fact, this is not one point, but three, each of which can be painted on a page; however, we will reduce them into one, for clarity and in order to avoid reproaches in exaggeration)
    4) HD + capacitive display, which for the first time will support not only touching with your fingers or the tip of your nose, but also with objects, or finger gloves, for example.
    5) Imagine that this is not Nokia, but Apple, in addition to the best mapping and navigation services on the market (which will now work offline, and Apple, you yourself know what is happening in this segment) will launch another mapping service, - with the function augmented reality, which when pointing the smartphone’s camera to the terrain, will give out information about institutions, organizations, etc. around.

Presented that all these characteristics are not Nokia Lumia 920, but iPhone5? Now imagine what would start around this device in social networks! Every first would write about the coming future, and every second would say that the spirit of Steve Jobs condemned Tim Cook, who dictated all this to him. Although, personally, in this case, I would have written something completely different: I would have written that Steve Jobs did not even die at all, but simply retired, retired, as they say, and his death is the first precedent of the so-called digital death when a public figure, as it were, dies, and whether the person himself physically died - God knows him. In general, I would write, Jobs is alive and lives in Crimea, well, either in Tibet, or in the Himalayas.

But Apple will also demonstrate that the spirit of Jobs dictated to Tim Cook. And if it suddenly turns out that Jobs’s spirit only ordered a little iPhone to be pulled out, then there will be embarrassment, for which, however, Apple will only be scolded a little, they say, it would have to be more creative after all. But Nokia for a truly breakthrough technology was subjected to such a massive attack that it was not even clear why and for what?

Formally, the ad, which, incidentally, was released before the device’s premiere, was shot not on the Lumia 920, but on a professional camera. Okay, let's look at this incident.

If the Lumia 920 was not yet ready at the time of shooting this video, you could shoot it on the Nokia 808 PureView. As a person who has very meticulously tested this device, I can assure you that it would have turned out no worse. Here is an example of a short movie with a girl, however, without a great one. I admit: I slightly corrected the colors in Canopus Edius. (preferably in Full HD)

Someone will say that the Nokia 808 PureView has 41 megapixels, and the Lumia 920 has only 8.7 megapixels, so this video cannot be shot on the Lumia 920. Not true! 41 megapixels in the Nokia 808 Pureview when recording video only affect the ability to zoom. That is, thanks to the 41 megapixel 3-fold digital zoom in the Nokia 808 PureView works the same as optical - without loss of quality. But the video is still shot in 8 megapixels. You can verify this with an example that is also recommended for viewing in Full HD resolution:

So, in principle, the Lumia 920 should shoot video no worse than the Nokia 808 PureView, only to zoom in on the picture just as successfully will not work. But in the video with the girl on the bike there is no zoom, so making such a video on the Lumia 920 would not be a problem.

And here, in fact, the question arises: why or why, in this case, this video was shot not on PureView, but on a professional camera, and even so that this camera was reflected in the window of the van opposite. Bloopers ?! All they do is just what they point their finger at, cackle and shout: ha ha ha! Lyayayap !!! But personally, I somehow do not really believe in the mistakes of professionals who receive hundreds of thousands of euros for their work. I'm not saying that you can pay for such a blunder and a head. And any person who has ever sat in the editing program knows that there is simply no chance to miss such a blunder by looking at the material in frames. He would have been noticed, 100% percent noticed! Can you imagine what diagonal monitors are installed by Nokia? Anything more than the monitors in The Verge, whose reporters seem to have discovered this blunder.

Rather, another effect is used here, which is called “gag from scratch”, or “visual gag” in the script’s jargon. In film cinema, such a technique was used by many, both great and unknown directors. For example, in Pazolini's film Decameron, whose action takes place as if in the 16th century (or in the 15th?), A bra trace suddenly appears on a naked heroine on her back. Or another, common example, when a microphone unexpectedly breaks into the frame space. Do you think Pasolini did not see a trace of a bra? Or did other directors not notice the microphone getting into the frame? Of course not. This is an absolutely conscious device aimed at attracting the attention of the viewer, a micro-scandal, a counterpoint that outrages a calm perception and focuses the viewer on the material with renewed vigor. Hollywood psychologists explain this to screenwriters like this:

This is if in a movie explain. And it can be explained in the media, in the journalistic. And then this is what happens: the reflection of the operator with a professional camera in the van window opposite appeared intentionally. So that a scandal would flare up that would attract the attention of PureView for sure more people than the video would attract the attention of, albeit very high quality (essentially the same thing), but shot on the Lumia 920 or Nokia 808 PureView. That is, in fact, I affirm that shooting this video clip on a professional camera and reflecting the operator with it in the van window opposite, is the work of Nokiev PR specialists and screenwriters. Yes, and The Verge reporters, I think (although I have no evidence), found out about this not without the help of Nokia itself.

As a screenwriter by training and a journalist with more than 20 years of experience, I barely know the kitchen of creating information lines. Therefore, for me personally, this whole scandal is only the professional work of the shadow PR team in soldering with journalists. By the way, when such plum scandals are planned, it is possible to anticipate jumps in stock quotes on the stock exchange and earn some pretty good money on them.

As for the two smartphones that Nokia introduced, the flagship Lumia 920 looks very cool, almost revolutionary, and I personally have no questions about Nokia itself. Well done! Nokia once again showed who is actually the coolest of all! Another thing is that questions remained to Microsoft. What is WP8 with itself? First of all: what about multitasking? - Because if WP8 will be a conceptual iOS clone, like WP7 was, then, I'm afraid Nokia’s revolutionary technologies may not be enough for the success of devices on this OS. Android users, in spite of the temptation of PureView, wireless charging, three microphones that write sound without problems in stereo 5 + 1 at a pressure of 140 decibels, a live display, before touching which in winter you will not need to remove gloves and other, other innovations, - so here for Android users, all this may not be enough if it turns out that WP8 is a closed OS with limited multitasking. And what is WP8 in fact, we will only find out at the end of October, when the working devices Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 will appear on store shelves.
