Google is working on the possibility of Android updates without the participation of manufacturers

Google, through the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), intends to conduct an experiment, the purpose of which is the potential possibility of updating Android on any devices to the current version of the system, without waiting for the device manufacturer to do this.

AOSP lead developer Jean-Baptiste Queru in the Google Building Android group left a note yesterday, the meaning of which is as follows: AOSP is developing an update to the Xperia S smartphone to a newer version of the system and plans to carry out similar projects for other devices in the future.

At the moment, the AOSP update of Xperia S to Android 4.0 has the status of an experiment that Google assigned to the project, but the FreeXperia team, which is engaged in XPeria smartphones as part of Cyanogen, has already joined the work. The device itself was chosen because it is a fairly powerful device (Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 2-core, 4.3 "screen diagonal, 1280x720 screen) with an unlocked bootloader - Sony favors cooperation with AOSP, allows you to fully manage your devices and even provides the community all necessary XPeria drivers.

Jean-Baptiste Kieru himself honestly admits that he does not know how the project will end, but if successful, nothing technically prevents the community from starting similar projects to update other smartphones, which the manufacturer may not have been planning to update for a long time and does it plan at all.
