IPv6 World Launch Day

Today, June 6, 2012, major providers, home network equipment manufacturers, and Internet companies all over the world have come together to forever enable IPv6 for their products and services in parallel with IPv4.

The site worldipv6launch.org argues that today the worldwide launch of IPv6, organized by the "Internet Society" and based on the success of the World IPv6 Day June 8, 2011, represents an important milestone in the global deployment IPv6. As the successor to the current IPv4 Internet Protocol, IPv6 is critical to the continued growth of the Internet as a platform for innovation and economic development.

In February 2011, IANA ran out of addresses for distribution to regional registrars. According toone of the fathers of Wint Cerf’s Internet, although some devices can already share the same address (the home router acts as a switch for the devices in your home), if IPv6 is not implemented, then you will soon have to share the same address with several people or even with an entire area.

A full transition will take some time. Some users may need to upgrade their home routers or update their operating system software to enable IPv6 in parallel with IPv4. If you are interested in knowing when you will get an IPv6 connection (if not already ), Screw Surf recommends asking your provider about this.
