Data Center Megaphone in the suburbs (Dmitrov)

Since the reports on excursions to the Samara data center of Megafon were published on Habré , let me share my current (yesterday, May 31) excursion to the data center of Megafon in the city of Dmitrov near Moscow.

Yes, here is such a two-story building, so to speak, of a point building, that is not very distinguished (especially after the Samara Data Center of Megaphone).

I must say right away that there were no subtexts and doubts - I’ve been a Megafon user since 2004, but I’m not a Megafon employee, not a blogger, they didn’t pay me for the article, everything that is written is my personal feelings. I also want to apologize for the quality of the photographs - as I can, I have what kind of equipment ...

Moscow, May 31, 2012, 9:30, gathering at the office of the Metropolitan branch of MegaFon on Vyatskaya Street 27, building 42. We are going to Dmitrov on a huge modern regular bus. On the way light breakfast, juice / tea / coffee. Information sheets were also handed out with a brief press release on this data center, which, by the way, can be found on the Megafon website . I will quote:
The own data processing center of the Capital branch of MegaFon OJSC is located in Dmitrov. Data center resources make it possible to ensure a high level of accessibility of information systems and data, their protection and safety, and make it possible to manage processes to ensure the continuous operation of information systems. The infrastructure of the complex includes the data center itself, a transformer substation, a diesel generator set, as well as a boiler room and a security post. In the building of the data center with a total area of 2200 square meters. m there are 5 car dealerships, power plants and a control center. The power supply system capacity is 1.5 MW. It implements 100% redundancy of all communications. Fiber optic lines are connected by different routes, which ensures uninterrupted data transmission and reliable network operation.

“The data center in Dmitrov was one of the first in the Moscow Region to receive a certificate of reliability of the second level - TIER II,” says Pavel Shutikov, head of the MegaFon capital facilities operation sector. “The high“ tensile strength ”provided allows us to carry out repair and maintenance work in the data center without interruption, which means the uninterrupted provision of telecommunication services to customers even in extreme operating conditions, the reliable operation of our own powerful network of the company and the infrastructures discussed at the partner center.”

Data Center resources are available to companies of any profile. “The data center is the most important object of our network, which allows us to provide modern telecommunication services to customers in the Moscow region,” said Tatyana Postnova, director of the Sever Regional Branch of the Moscow branch of MegaFon OJSC. - This is renting a place in car dealerships or racks (Co-location), renting physical and virtual servers, providing software as a service, providing specially designed cloud services (file storage, mail, etc.). With data center services, our corporate clients can increase business efficiency, get a reliable high-tech infrastructure, reduce the cost of maintaining an IT infrastructure without compromising its quality and efficiency. ”

True, from the presentation we will later find out that the total area of the complex is 5405 km.m, and the total data center area is 2370 sq.m., on which there are 5 car dealerships with a design number of racks equal to 273.

Upon arrival at the place ( indicated the scheme of the complex on Y. Karty ) we issue daily passes for a regime object. The guards are friendly, funny, which is very nice. Also at the entrance near the turnstile we find a very convenient automatic boot cover (photographed at the exit, so there is an ugly mountain of used shoe covers nearby)

and a diagram of the first floor (marked halls / rooms)

First, a presentation was shown, from which, in addition to dry statistics on data centers, we learned that RuTube, Siemens, VTB24 and other large companies use data center services (as was said, from 5 computers :)), that servers are rented for cloud computing, and that Megafon is at the stage of transformation from a basic services operator to an integrated services operator. It was also said that soon Megafon will enter the market of hosting providers for the masses.

Next, the tour was led by Pavel Shutikov, as a month earlier for the press .

First, we were taken to the car number 1. The temperature, according to Paul, should be kept at 22-23 degrees. It felt like it was even less.

A few things made me think:
- perforation of the raised floor, where the cold air comes from, is very rare (unlike many other auto showrooms many times shown on Habré);
- false ceilings are very low and where the warm air goes is also not very clear, maybe there are hoods above the ceiling panels, but they weren’t visible;
- many racks are 50-80% empty (of course I'm not an expert, but probably the cabinets are not in order to be empty, apparently the data center is still not working 100%).

Then we visited the Battery Room

And here Pavel on the left says something actively gesturing

Then we were taken to the SGPT (gas fire extinguishing system) hall. According to the assurances, the gas in this system is absolutely harmless to humans. System performance is monitored quarterly.

And the balloons are almost the height of a person

Grounding of cylinders

And so we at the Switchboard

Technician told us that now the data center consumes 1.5 MW, but the channel is reserved up to 2 MW, i.e. there is room to grow. The data center is connected to 2m highways (if one fails, the second is automatically connected). But if both of them suddenly fail, then diesel generators are included in the work - 4 pieces of 700 kW each (photos will be lower on the street), i.e. even with a total consumption of 2 MW, the operation of the data center will be provided by 3 generators, and the 4th will be backup in case of failure or repair of one of the generators. And all this electric bacchanal is completed by rechargeable batteries, which smooth out the transitions between power sources and in the most critical situation can support the system without power (a huge UPS).

At the entrance, 396 V (a little higher than the norm of 380 V).

Protection first.

Then we were taken to the second floor to Car Room No. 3.

In two halls there was only 1 closed corridor (I do not remember the name). The

cooling system on the second floor to Car Room No. 3

Then we happily escaped from a very noisy and fairly cold bus terminal onto the street. A 72 meter tower, 4 diesel generators (blue containers with exhaust pipes) and a cooling system (gray-green containers) awaited us there.

And here is the tower in parts (over the spans) from top to down.

Impressive structure.

One of the towers of the tower

After the tour, there was a short tea party and the guards checked all the photographs of visitors for the presence of surveillance cameras and motion sensors (they could not be taken).

Well, at the end, Megafon gave us certificates and gave us a little (well, not a bribe, it is !!! I treat him with respect). A flashlight shines with a megaphone sign (just like Batman's spotlight).

P.S. All full- size photographs in one archive (112Mb). If you need to fill in more - specify.

P.P.S. I hope you enjoyed the trip report. Do not judge strictly for the technical side, as the tour was non-stop and very quick (less than an hour), plus it was almost impossible to hear Pavel in the bus stations if he did not manage to take a place in the front row of the audience.

UPDI remembered 2 more facts. According to Paul, a power of 10 kW was supplied to the tower. Below the tower, the signal level was -44dBm.
