    Hello! Using the example of the HyperX Fury DDR4 kit operating at 3466 MHz, we will show and prove that when you buy top-end components, it makes no sense to save on RAM.

    Kingston's blog wouldn't be itself if we didn't tell you about the benefits of using fast RAM in a personal computer. It has long been believed that the main parameter in RAM is volume. And this is definitely the case. For example, last year we found out that the gaming PC must have 16 GB of RAM installed. However, other RAM parameters are important, and in particular, frequency. A recent testing of the flagship processor Ryzen - Ryzen 7 2700X - showed that even the most productive chips depend on the speed of the brains. Well, let's take the example of a high-frequency dual-channel HyperX Fury HX434C19FRK2 / 32 kit 32 GB, we’ll see how much faster the Coffee Lake’s flagship processor will be - the 6-core Core i7-8700K.

    The HyperX Fury DDR4 RAM series is well known to computer enthusiasts. To date, Kingston has a large range of such RAM . You can purchase both a single module with a capacity of 4, 8 and 16 GB, as well as two- and four-channel kits consisting of strips of the same size. At the same time, there are DDR4 kits on sale that operate at the effective frequency of 2133, 2400, 2666, 2933, 3200 and even 3466 MHz. As you can see, HyperX Fury memory is suitable for all platforms supporting the fourth generation of DDR.

    As we have said, the main character in this article is the dual-channel HyperX Fury HX434C19FRK2 / 32 set.. This set of RAM consists of a pair of modules with a total capacity of 32 GB. The memory bars are equipped with two XMP profiles at once. According to the first preset, the kit operates at an effective frequency of 3466 MHz with main delays of 19-23-23 at a very low voltage — only 1.2 V.

    When the second XMP profile is activated, the HyperX Fury HX434C19FRK2 / 32 kitIt works at an effective frequency of 2933 MHz with a latency of 17-19-19 and exactly the same voltage of 1.2 V. It is interesting that by default the modules start up immediately in DDR4-2933 mode, if the Intel system, of course, uses a motherboard on based on Z-chipset. We remind you that for the LGA1151-v2 platform for the Coffee Lake processors, high-frequency memory is supported only on motherboards based on the Z370 Express chipset. Solutions based on chipsets such as H310, B370 and H370 Express support RAM with a maximum effective frequency of 2666 MHz.     And now let's proceed directly to testing the HyperX Fury HX434C19FRK2 / 32 kit with a Core i7-8700K processor. In our opinion, the Fury Series RAM is great for both gaming PCs and workstations. Therefore, in the test bench, we used the heaped MSI Z370 GODLIKE GAMING gaming motherboard and the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 video card. Naturally, the same Windows 10 assemblies, drivers and software were used.

    The performance of the processor and memory was measured using the following software:

    • Corona 1.3. Testing the rendering speed with the help of the same name renderer. The speed of the standard BTR scene used to measure performance is measured.
    • WinRAR 5.40. Built-in benchmark popular archiver.
    • Blender 2.79. Determining the speed of the final rendering in one of the popular free packages for creating three-dimensional graphics. The duration of building the final model from Blender Cycles Benchmark rev4 is measured.
    • Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6.9. Performance testing when exporting 200 RAW format photos with a resolution of 5184 × 3456 pixels to JPEG format with a resolution of 1620 × 1080 and maximum quality.
    • Adobe After Effects CC 2017. Rendering the project in the format of 1920 × 1080 @ 60 FPS.
    • Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2018. Performance testing for non-linear video editing with the imposition of various effects in the resolution of Full HD.

    Testing the system in games was done in Full HD resolution. The graphs show not only the average, but also the minimum FPS. The list of applications is as follows:

    • GTA V. DirectX 11. Built-in benchmark. Maximum graphics quality, advanced graphics quality settings are off, image resolution is off, 16x AF, no anti-aliasing.
    • The Witcher III. DirectX 11. Novigrad. High quality graphics mode, NVIDIA HairWorks off, HBAO +, AA.
    • Far Cry 5. DirectX 11. Built-in benchmark. High Mode, TAA.
    • Assassin's Creed: Origins. DirectX 11. Built-in benchmark. High mode, without smoothing.

    Testing of the HyperX Fury HX434C19FRK2 / 32 kit was conducted in four modes. First, we used the settings DDR4-2400 (17-19-19-39). Then the profiles of the XMP memory kit were activated: DDR4-3466 (19-23-2342) and DDR4-2933 (17-19-19-39). In addition, the whale of RAM absolutely calmly overclocked to the effective frequency of 3,600 MHz. To achieve such a good result, it was not necessary either to increase the delays or to raise the voltage of the DRAM Voltage.

    First, consider the results obtained in non-game applications.

    If you are a creative person, and you need a fast PC to achieve your goals, then the presence of high-frequency RAM in it is very important. See how much more efficient the testbed works in Adobe applications. The system with DDR4-2933 memory became faster than DDR4-2400 in Lightroom by 19%, and when using the main XMP-profile (DDR4-3466) - by 23%. It turns out, Kingston's high-frequency memory made the already productive Core i7-8700K almost a quarter faster! But we use fairly simple test scripts. In real life, using HyperX Fury HX434C19FRK2 / 32 will save a photographer, video editor, or engineer several hours of valuable time when doing truly challenging projects.

    A similar picture is observed in other applications. These are usually tasks related to processing large amounts of data: archiving, processing photos and videos, rendering graphics. In fairness, we note that there are tasks in which fast DDR4 memory does not greatly affect the performance of the CPU. It is important here that HyperX Fury HX434C19FRK2 / 32 has a large volume.

    Of course, in any gaming PC, the main violin is considered a video card. The more powerful the graphics adapter, the higher the FPS. However, in many projects, there is the so-called effect of processor dependence. The slower the CPU is used in the system unit, the lower the frame rate in games. Surprisingly, even with the Core i7-8700K you cannot completely get rid of this effect. It is necessary either to overclock the processor, or to use fast RAM.

    For example, in GTA V, when using DDR4-3466 memory, the system became 5% faster compared to DDR4-2400. A small increase, but it is. At the same time, the minimum FPS increased significantly - by 19%. If we installed it in a PC, for example, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti - the difference would be even more significant. There are games in which high-frequency memory does not affect performance so much. This means that the graphics card's GPU is 100% loaded and there is no processor dependency.


    So, over the past couple of months we have clearly shown that the flagship processors without and with high-frequency RAM are devices with a noticeably different level of performance. This is proved by the example of the flagship 8-core Ryzen 7 2700X and now by the example of the top 6-core chip, Coffee Lake.

    In our opinion, a balanced PC with a fast CPU should have a high-frequency memory kit. Here, the HyperX Fury HX434C19FRK2 / 32 model shows itself in the best possible way . The effective frequency of 3466 MHz is a completely relevant feature in 2018, which you definitely cannot call useless. In addition, the set has 32 GB of memory - for example, in a gaming computer of this size is enough for a long time.
