DasKeyboard Ultimate S Review (Perhaps the first in a few years)

Finally I got my dream :)

In the photo - my brand new dasKeyboard ( dasKeyboard.com ). There are now pieces of them in Russia, judging by the fact that it was not possible to find a single message about the purchase or sale. Nobody takes anything directly from Russia or Europe to Russia. eBay declined for all existing offers. In the USA, I ordered through a forwarder, they were silent for a month and now they woke up, but those American ones are still flying. The American version has a slightly different layout, as far as the concept of layout can be applicable here.

DasKeyboard is produced in two series - Ultimate and Professional. Each series has one standard model and one Silent modification.

The Professional series has normal button labels (it’s clear that the Cyrillic alphabet is not there). But the Ultimate series is the most interesting, all the keys are absolutely and matte black. This is exactly what I ordered myself (plus there are more for friends :).

So, what is it remarkable for?

The keyboard is heavy - it weighs 1.36 kg. It is very convenient, it does not crawl on the table, but stands like a glove. The buttons are almost unsteady. Pressing a key gives a clear click, and the nature of this click is different - in backspace it is slightly different, for example. It has even been thought out that the keys pressed by the little fingers should require less pressure.

Keyboard True N-key Rollover - this means that you can press at least five, six keys simultaneously. Each key is scanned completely independently and the operation of each key does not depend on whether the adjacent key is pressed, in contrast to conventional keyboards, where polling of keys occurs through the "matrix". Conventional keyboards have ways to prevent problems with simultaneous pressing, but they do not always work just because of the matrix design. Here, each key is a separate mechanism. USB-PS / 2 adapter included. I thought it was just a tribute to the old "cars", where there is no USB - but not so, it turned out. PS / 2 allows you to use more than six simultaneous clicks.

Buttons in the Ultimate series on Cherry MX Blue mechanics. Considered the best for typing. The design is such that the fingers easily catch the moment the key is triggered. Some people like to play keyboards with Cherry MX Blue toggles, but most have difficulty re-tapping quickly. By the way, this is the only mechanism in the entire Cherry line that makes the same clicking sound. Which some may remember from IBM Model M. However, there the design of the buttons was much simpler, dumber and more unreliable. But the sound is similar (though softer).

Reliability of the mechanism - 50 million clicks. This is 10-20 times more than membrane keyboards. However, I haven’t a single membrane keyboard in the part of contacts yet broken, but the laptop keys themselves have failed more than once.

For those who still do not know how to print "blindly" - the skill is acquired in a couple of days. It’s like in that “Jumble” about the Brazilian system. The usual keyboard cools - you can always peek and we always use it. There is an interesting feature here: as soon as you try to look, you stumble. One has only to relax and press "on a hunch" - as soon as you get into the right button. A day or two, and the problems disappear completely.

The keyboard has a built-in USB 2.0 hub. The keyboard itself takes up a couple of USB ports (or USB + PS / 2).

So, I have this keyboard in two pieces - for myself and for someone else. A couple more are flying from the USA. Who cares - throw contacts).
