Time tracking system by the method of A. A. Lyubishchev

Good day, dear Khabravchane!
Not so long ago, my attention was attracted by the post “A few words about motivation, time, goals and people,” written under the impression of a read biography of Professor Lyubishchev. It spoke a lot about achieving personal results, as a consequence of applying the theory, but did not specify the principles of the time tracking system itself. The desire to find out the details and, possibly, to later test this theory on myself prompted me to read the story of Daniil Granin “This strange life”, which is a kind of biography of professor A. A. Lyubishchev in free form. Anyone who could not read a book about the great scientist in the original, but interested in his system as a whole - I ask for cat.

Who is he?

Immediately I would like to tell a little about the main character and why his biography, and even more so the system, deserves attention. Not at all charismatic, not attractive in appearance, the poorly dressed old man possessed popularity, which you could only dream of. An entomologist professor from somewhere in Ulyanovsk, not even a laureate, gathered full audiences of institutes throughout the country. What was the secret of his success? In deep knowledge of genetics or mathematics? There were scientists and stronger. In his erudition? This does not get mass recognition. There are still a couple of trump cards inherent in Lyubishchev - his hereticity. With many of the existing, he could go against. He could have questioned the seemingly unshakable positions of Darwin, Schrödinger, and the evidence cited from where no one else had thought, something self-deported.

His lifelong activities

Lyubishchev gave lectures, headed the department, department of a scientific institute, and traveled on expeditions throughout Russia. He was fluent in several languages: English, German, Italian, French, and he studied the first two in transport. In the so-called free time, he was engaged in the classification of earthen fleas. The volume of these works only looks like this: by 1955 Lyubishchev had collected 35 boxes of mounted fleas. There were 13,000 of them. The flea should have been identified, measured, prepared, and labels produced. He collected six times more materials than there was at the Zoological Institute.
Lyubishchev worked both deep and wide, was both a narrow specialist and a generalist. He, being an extremely inquisitive man, could not limit himself. Lyubishchev is fond of seemingly extraneous things, gets involved in discussions, writes treatises on extraneous topics. He could not follow the diet of his mind and, in this regard, sinned by “gluttony”. Perhaps these distractions helped Lyubishchev in his main activity? After all, for example, Wagner valued his poems higher than music. There is also an ancient saying: “a doctor cannot be a good doctor if he is only a good doctor . The range of his knowledge was difficult to determine. This was not a phenomenon of memory. Such knowledge arose due to reasons that will be discussed below.

His legacy

The legacy left by Lyubishchev can be classified as follows: works on the systematics of earthen fleas, the history of science, agriculture, genetics, plant protection, philosophy, entomology, zoology, and the theory of evolution. Published about seventy scientific papers on analysis of variance, on the theory of systematics, on entomology.
Didn’t you think that such productivity looks mysterious? If not, maybe you have something to show similar in scale? Throughout his life, to the very end (and he died at 82), his performance only increased. The question arises how he achieved this. It is the answer to this question that is a discovery that exists independently of all his other works and studies.
He did not have students, like the great Einstein and Lomonosov, but he had many admirers, supporters and admirers. He did not teach, he learned how to live.

System

The principle of the system was extremely simple - to keep a detailed record of time, whether it was spent on scientific work, reading fiction or relaxing, such as talking with friends.
Having laid the foundation for the system at the age of 26 and using it for the rest of his life, Lyubishchev seemed to have started a countdown clock inside himself. Not only did he, like no one else, realize the importance and value of every hour of human life, but he also learned to feel time as something material. Even the professor’s children later told the author of the book, in the person of D. Granin, about how they entered the office of his father with a question, answering which the professor, without even noticing it, put notes in the beginning and end of the conversation in his diary. He did it already, even despite his watch! As if time had become something tangible for him!
He could never just “kill time” . This has always been a time of knowledge, a time of creation, a time of enjoying life. Recognizing Lyubishchev, you can no longer agree with the usual statement that “life is short” , because you can have so much time in it: you can get enough work and travel, see a lot, hear, read, raise and raise children.

Daily entries

Daily diary entries were maximally compressed. Here is a real example of one of the days of life:

“Sosnogorsk. 0.5. DOS Scientific (bibliogr. - 15 m. Dobrzhansky - 1 h. 15 m.). Systematic entomology, excursion - 2 hours 30 meters, installation of two traps - 20 meters, analysis - 1 hour 55 meters. Rest, bathed for the first time in Ukhta. Known. 20 m. Honey. gas. - 15 m. Hoffmann “The Golden Pot” - 1 h. 30 m. Letter to Andron - 15 m.
Only 6 h. 15 m. ”

Traced all day, down to reading newspapers. Abbreviations introduced by the professor for convenience are observed, such as “Dos. Scientific. ”- The main scientific work. At the end of the month, the diaries flowed into the reports.

Monthly reports

Monthly reports contained the total time spent on various areas of its activities.

“The main scientific work is 59 hours and 45 meters.
Systematic. Entomology - 20 h. 55 m
. work - 50 hours 25 meters.
Org. work - 5 hours 40 meters.
Total 136 hours 45 meters. ”

Each item has a more detailed time decoding. The main scientific work and 59 hours 45 meters. What were they spent on? Again, all the transcripts were lower in the report:

“1. According to taxa - a sketch of the report “System Logic” - 6 hours 25 meters
2. Miscellaneous - 1 hours 30 meters
3. Proofreading “Dadonology” - 30 meters
4. Mathematics - 16 hours 40 meters
5. Current literature: Lyapunov - 55
hours 6. Biology - 12 hours 00 hours.
7. Scientific letters - 11 hours 55 hours.
8. Scientific notes - 3 hours 25 meters.
9. Bibliography - 6 hours 55 meters.
Total 59 hours 45 meters. ”

And even for some of these points, such as “Biology”, a transcript could be given in the form:

“1. Dobrzhansky "Maynkind Evolving." 372 pp., Finished reading (Total 16 hours 55 meters) - 6 hours 45 meters
2. Anosh Kara “Do Animals Think”, 91 pages - 2 hours 00
3. Manuscript R. Berg - 2 hours 00 m.
4. Nekoro Z., Osverdo ... 17 pp. - 40 m.
5. Ratner's manuscript - 35 m.
Total 12 h.

Although such details seem superfluous, for the system it was necessary to know all the active time. There is no useless time. All the time is equally expensive. Every hour counts towards the expense of life and they are all equal.
The plan for the next month is based on lessons learned from previous reports. Example: I plan to read an art book next month, and from previous reports I know that on average I read 20 pages of fiction per hour. The value of the speed of reading technical literature or in a foreign language will be different, but obtained in a similar way.

Annual report

The annual report, as it were, sums up the results. Summarizes the hours spent on all categories of activity, even such as communication, travel and household chores. Having reports from previous years, it makes it possible to compare and analyze the delta in all categories, to take it into account when planning next year.
At times, he sent out reports to friends. They were called "year-old messages." Of course, this was just a selection of what has been done and what it is working on.

Зачем все это нужно

And by this moment, probably, someone has already had a question: who needs all this reporting in writing, to whom should I report? The answer is simple - in front of yourself. This is an elementary self-attention, interest in oneself. So, in one of the annual reports of Lyubishchev in the “Entertainment” group, the figure was 65. “Entertainment - 65 times.” But what such information can give us with you? Can we evaluate a lot or a little when we have nothing to compare with? Even an approximate figure in relation to yourself is difficult to name. It turns out that we ourselves do not know much about ourselves. Do we read more over the years, how much time is spent on this or that activity, how does our productivity and interests change annually? The author of the documentary short story “This Strange Life”, Daniel Granin, is convinced that Time is a people's wealth like forests and lakes, and it should be used wisely, not to destroy. The author expresses the opinion that sooner or later children will be taught “time-use” at school, from childhood to cultivate a love of time as nature. And, perhaps, it is difficult to disagree with these statements.

In conclusion

Of course, the Beloved system is not a ready-made universal tool. She was not planned to be such. For years, he has been honing it for himself, choosing a comfortable and, at the same time, necessary level of detail for diaries and reports, convenient alternation of activities for him, necessary for fruitful work of the amount of sleep. But, at the same time, his system is not one of the next creations of time management theorists, based on loud motivating sayings. He simply sacredly believed in the value of every hour of his life and faithfully followed the goals set by himself.

Ps If I, using a brief summary, managed to convey to you the main idea and make the responsibility trigger for your time switch to the “On” position, then my main task has been successfully completed, and you will be able to achieve something more in your life, be it extra read books, learned a foreign language or just achieving your goal.
