ICANN has decided to host the tzdata time zone knowledge base on its servers , whose fate has been threatened by a recent lawsuit . According to ICANN, hosting of this base is consistent with the organization’s goals, one of which is to support the stable operation of the Internet.
Now tzdata is located on the servers of the Internet Address Space Administration (IANA, ICANN) at http://www.iana.org/time-zones .

As reported, the previous maintainer of the database, Arthur David Olson, since 2009, has been trying to find a new sponsor for the project to retire. Negotiations on this subject with ICANN have been going on for at least six months . The lawsuit filed against Olson by the astrological software development company Astrolabe, Inc., only expedited the procedure.
ICANN will ensure the availability of the tzdata database during the trial, including historical data. In addition, ICANN has committed to take on all legal issues that may arise.
