GDD 2011: Developer Impressions
Somewhere there was a post that it was important for the developer to feel like part of the industry. Communicate with colleagues, share experiences, discuss proven technologies and innovations in the world of software and hardware with other people. That a real developer needs conferences like air and not even to learn about new technology. No, you just need to communicate with the same geeks, feel yourself in a technological get-together. And Google conferences are doing just fine with this task - to give the opportunity to chat with the same developers as you.
The format of the event is quite simple: 6 streams, which are called tracks here in the American manner. Each has its own topic of reports. Android, Cloud, Social / Common, Tech Talks, Chrome & Html5, and GTUG Stream. All reports, except GTUG, are conducted in English, but for those who do not understand, there are headphones in which simultaneous translation sounds. The quality of the translation is up to par, but English from a native speaker is one of the things for which I want to attend such conferences.
The introduction said a lot of words about the main Google products: Chrome, Android, Google Plus. Each guest was told about by a specially invited guest - for Android, they became ZeptoLab, known for its Cut The Rope.
Streams were not equivalent. No, equally high quality, prepared, thought out. But they were not equal in public interest, or something. Some rooms were a little more than half full, and others weren’t allowed to enter (I never got into HTML 5). Again, the technical level of the reports was very different. Somewhere there was a lot of code, and somewhere just talk on the topic. Here it is necessary to make a reservation that apparently a report with a lot of code is, firstly, wrong, because the level of the audience will be very different, and secondly, it will be difficult to make it interesting and enticing.
I managed to visit the streams of Android and Tech Talks. Unfortunately, nothing new was said about Android. All the same Market, on which some changes have occurred, all the same user interface designs, all the same technological platform features. In-app purchasing, which for a long time has not become more convenient; cloud 2 device messaging, which was talked about last year. It’s a pity, but it seemed that the Android team was primarily busy polishing versions 3.x, developing into 4.0.
I liked Tech Talks much more. The OAuth and OpenId talk is the ideal technical talk. Conditions, sequence of executions, code examples, super. The report dramatically improved my impression of the conference.
Google seems to have promised to post videos of reports, we are waiting.
What conferences you can’t refuse is in a friendly, non-stressful atmosphere. Compared to the same Sun Tech Days, it is very comfortable and spacious. Everywhere there are gaming and not only gadgets (however, they are always busy with someone), refrigerators with drinks, comfortable amorphous chairs and, of course, sockets. Crocus Expo is itself a huge exhibition complex, but even one floor in the pavilion occupied by the conference was enormous in size, so despite the presence of a large number of people, it was quite spacious.
At lunch, they served hot and salad, closer to the end - coffee with sweets, just before the conference closed - beer.
Another distinguishing feature is the presence of a large number of personnel specialists who are suitable for people with a laptop and handing their own business cards, talking about companies and people interested in your skills. Immediately you feel like a target.
At the conference, Internet access was provided via Wi-Fi, which naturally could not cope with the influx of people who wanted to even check mail. It's funny, but in one place there were protruding twisted pairs, and it was possible to eagerly occupy the entire channel.
Google Technologies User Group occupied a separate stream, no, the main conference room! Simple developers presented their own projects using Google technology. The favorite technological combination was the union of Arduino and Android. It was very interesting to listen to how people with their own hands implemented useful and just funny things like RoboWars.
Almost everyone was able to get a pen, a notebook, a sack and a T-shirt with relevant inscriptions. For shirts lined up an illusory line. They also gave wooden yo-yo with the inscriptions "Russia" and "Google".
Google conferences are great. No technical overlays and stocks, excellent speakers, and most importantly - the atmosphere of the technical hangout so necessary for the developer. Looking forward to GDD 2012!
