The real alternative to nVidia 3Dvision or when cheap doesn't mean bad

Once upon a time, when Pentium-we were the first, gigabytes of hard, and PCI-based graphics cards. I somehow bought for my organization a wonderful GeForce video card in a beautiful box, where, besides the card itself, there were also glasses with LCD shutters ...
For those born in the USSR, this was not the first acquaintance with stereoscopy. In childhood, there were stereo slides and trips to the stereo movie theater, so it was at least interesting to see 3D games directly in 3D.
But really a good idea, the games used OpenGL and Direct3D and nVidia was not difficult, changing the position of the "camera" in the game to get camera angles for the right and left eye, even if the creators of the game did not even think about it. Of course, there were problems with the menu, game indicators, and scope, and to this day they are pursuing stereoscopic fans, although the developers of the so-called “3D drivers” and nVidia, among them, manage to deal with this, and not without success ...

However, with the death of CRT The theme of stereoscopic games on personal computers has stalled. And it did not look very attractive, due to a strong drop in brightness and noticeable flicker. In addition, there was no pronounced “wow effect” like in a movie theater.
Like modern 3D monitors and televisions, the three-dimensional image floated somewhere in the back of the monitor, like in an aquarium and almost did not go out, so that hired trolls would not write on hard forums, alas, the volume effect is still related to the screen size, so in any portable devices with 3D screens there is no special meaning ...
And there are at least two reasons, the first is that the illusion of volume is created by the presence of horizontal parallaxes of the image angles. Accordingly, when you change the image scale, the scale of the screen parallaxes, and as a result, the illusion of volume created by these parallaxes, respectively, changes. These are not some psychological features of visual perception, this is ordinary mathematics, stupid and merciless.
However, the above-mentioned psychological features of image perception are just the second reason, drowning objects with negative screen parallaxes (extending beyond the screen) under the surface of the screen. Well, the human mind does not want, being in its right mind and sober mind, to see an image that goes beyond the screen. “Cats are not allowed, not allowed” - in a professional stereo movie this is called “Depressing effect of the edge of the screen”.
In the cinema, this problem can be solved simply, with a large screen that covers the viewing angle of the viewer, so even massive objects can be brought out into the space of the hall, and all kinds of contrasting sparks, stars, splashes and drops of blood will readily scatter throughout the hall :-)

But we will return to ours today, and today we have many 3D TVs, monitors and projectors, which have become so affordable for the price that I personally, for the above reasons, do not see much sense in TVs and monitors.
IMHO the only feature of 3D TVs is that they are capable of reproducing stereo images in anamorphic formats “side by side” and “over-under”. Thus, you can watch 3D movies from a regular DVD or downloaded from the Internet without too many shorts. I remember watching 3D videos from YouTube on a friend’s TV, long before 3D Vision support appeared, I simply deployed it to the full screen and turned it on in “side by side”. And although the anamorphic "side by side" IMHO is evil and trash, today it is the de facto standard. Satellite 3D channels work in it, most of the household 3D cameras and cameras are recorded in it, in it 3D films walk on tyrnets.
However, with the same success, 3D films can be watched on a computer, for Windows and Linux there is a wonderful free program by Kirill Gavrilovwww.sview.ru
Of the paid programs, the most popular StereoscopicPlayer 3dtv.at it allows you to play BlueRay3D discs and unprotected movie theater containers.
For owners of nVidia 3D Vision there is a free version of Stereoscopic, and in general nVidia impresses with its simplicity and readiness to use the system out of the box, however it is no coincidence that the toad and the nVidia logo are the same color. 3D vision kits are not cheap at all, and after some version of the drivers, they work only with relatively new nVidia video cards, although before, everything worked fine even on ION, not in terms of games, but you could watch a movie, not like now: - (Another manifestation of the nVidia toad is that if you use a projector / TV / monitor for which you already have the appropriate glasses, you still have to buy the 3D Vision kit. It’s good that nVidia glasses sometimes work in this situation, otherwise it’s completely offensive, given the low cost of the original Cove from nVidia. However rabble of invention, and the Chinese brothers did not take long to wait. Usually, Chinese crafts are associated with something primitive, largely inferior to the original. And in this regard, 3D Vision kits from PALMEXX openly amazed me, because in comparison with them, the original 3D Vision kits from nVidia do not look high-quality, crooked and damp! I will not go into the circuitry details about which technically competent people alreadydemotivators draws .
I’ll say as a simple consumer. The set from nVidia consists of a “pyramid” on which is located the control wheel and the glasses itself, since the connection between them is infrared, the “pyramid” must be within line of sight, if you use a 3D monitor, this will not be a problem, but with the projector will have to dance. And you’ll have to dance with a tambourine, because the “pyramid” is not good for USB extension cords and hubs :-) Glasses from nVidia are not bad, but two friends have already died, and in a very strange way one lcd shutter failed, with fully working electronics.

Unlike the original nVidia 3D Vision, the PALMEXX 3D PX-203 KIT clone doesn’t even turn the language into a clone, because apart from the affordable priceit uses a two-way radio channel at 2.4GHz, that is, the "pyramid" can be dropped behind the system unit and forget about its existence, the control buttons are right on the glasses!

They are not buggy, do not fall off, and out of 40 points, for six months I only once encountered a breakdown, the form of a retracted loop of the LCD shutter, which was safely stuck back and retracted by a plug. (In the original nVidia, the cables are glued \ welded and the hell knows how to fix them.) In general, after the ordeal with nVidia 3D Vision I still go under the influence of PALMEXX, there are no words, only emotions, and positive ones!

"Pyramids" and PALMEXX glasses, are sold without problems, either as a set or separatelywhich allows you to save significantly if you already have a 3D TV or DLP-Link projector with the appropriate glasses. PALMEXX also makes DLP-Link glasses, and they cost a little cheaper than glasses for radio dialing, but for myself I chose radio glasses, because unlike DLP-Link, 3D Vision glasses always display angles correctly, and with DLP-Link this happens 50 \ 50 which, in general, is not scary, because in all programs there is an opportunity to quickly change places, but it’s just more convenient.

PS. Here’s such a “review” \ "stream of consciousness", excuse me, a copywriter from me is worthless, but I’ve got a lot of 3D technology through my hands lately, so I decided to share my experience, because I have something to compare with, not stupidly admire new technologies, provoking people to buy unnecessary trash ... If it is interesting, I can also write how to play 3D on Radeon-ah, how to watch a movie on the ceiling and not twist your neck, how to shoot / render and mount stereoscopic material. In general, from the moment of writing this post , this whole 3D topic has gone far beyond hobbies and experiments for me, into a serious scientific work, for this I actually don’t even know how to continue, it worked, it worked (even some videos in Tyrnet began to spread)but there is too much to write about.
