Iceland Introduces Crowdsourcing Constitution

Icelanders on Friday presented what could set an example for other governments: a constitution written by crowdsourcing.

A group of 25 citizens submitted a draft constitution to the Icelandic parliament. 25 ordinary people drew up a document on the Internet with the help of hundreds of volunteers. The Constitutional Council published the first draft in April on its website , and then allowed citizens to comment on it through its Facebook page . Board members are also active on Twitter, posting videos of themselves on YouTube and sharing images on Flickr.

The first constitution of Iceland was adopted in 1944, when the country gained independence from Denmark. The country's economic collapse in 2008 led to calls to rewrite the constitution with a system of checks and balances to prevent a recurrence of the financial crisis. Now a new draft can be put to a referendum without consideration by parliament.
