Inattentive students in Chinese schools begin to “catch” using a face recognition system

Computerization helps us all live better. With the help of specialized software and hardware systems, business, military, and scientists increase the efficiency of their work. The Chinese believe that computers should help students improve academic performance. Not only through effective training systems, but also through other tools.

Namely - facial recognition systems. Classes change, but only a little - after the modernization, three “eyes” look at the students over the board. We are talking about cameras that transmit video to specialized servers. And there, the software package highlights those students who are distracted - they look out the window, draw something in a notebook, or chat with their neighbor.

In principle, we were all distracted in the classroom, but we were able to do this because the teacher could not follow everyone at the same time. Some educators didn't even care if they were listening to them or not. Quiet in the classroom - and all right, but what really happens there doesn’t matter.

In China, things could change soon. It all started with the installation of the system in question in one class of a randomly selected school. There are already positive changes in terms of students' attitudes toward learning, and they are going to transfer the experience to other schools.

Pupils talk about their impressions in the following way: “Earlier, when I had lessons that I didn’t like too much, I could be lazy, look at the table, pick my books,” says one of the students. “Now you won’t do it - cameras are constantly watching me. They look like mysterious eyes that constantly look at me. "

The face recognition system evaluates the facial expressions of students, and then analyzes all this information, displaying data. Pupils and teachers can see statistics calculated by a computer.

The recognition system can identify seven different emotions, including neutral facial expressions, happiness, sadness, bewilderment, anger, fear and surprise. If the system “sees” that someone is distracted and does not listen to the teacher, he receives a notification and a reminder of the need to act.

According to the authors of the system, it is not a tracking tool, but an assistant teacher, which helps to improve the quality of education. They do not agree that this is an intervention in the life of schoolchildren, saying that the system analyzes only the facial expressions of students, and not their actions throughout the day.

In fact, for China, privacy is not sacred. There are many cameras that track, for example, offenders on the roads, both pedestrians and motorists. With the help of cameras, a suspect in a crime at a stadium with 50,000 seats was recently detained.

In China, a social rating is gradually being introduced into the work, which determines the capabilities of a person. Those who often break the rules, quarrel with their neighbors, try to get on the subway without paying and generally behave badly towards the laws, can cut back on their rights. You can’t take a loan, you can’t go abroad or even buy tickets for a commuter train.
