DIY Handgum

I think it will be right to say right away that this topic does not claim to be new. It is possible that all readers of Habr have long been able to do handgams at home, but the search is stubbornly silent, which is why I decided to publish this short note.

Now they often write about handgams . This is such a useless little thing that you can sculpt from, like plasticine, which you can play with, like a rubber ball, and if you hit it sharply, it will crack like glass. True, these "fragments" can again be blinded together. It sounds attractive, but I still don’t want to pay money for such a toy.

Now I will tell you how to make handgams myself at home. We will need ordinary clerical (silicate) glue and vodka (and preferably pure alcohol). We mix alcohol and glue in equal proportions (if we use vodka instead of alcohol, then in volume fractions it should be somewhere 1.5 times more than glue) and we get a very white mass that is very nasty to the touch. By consistency, it will resemble a thick wallpaper glue. Overcoming disgust, we take it in hand and wash it in cold (!) Water. That's all. The handgam is ready: you can sculpt figures out of it, if you drop it on the floor, it will jump almost a meter, and if you hit it sharply, you will get “fragments”, about which I wrote above. There is only one difference from industrial handgam - lifetime. Our homemade craft retains its properties for several hours, and then finally dries.

PS If we talk about the physics of the process, then it’s worth remembering how solids differ from liquids. The main difference is the so-called relaxation time - i.e. the rate at which the molecular structure of a substance reacts to external forces. In handgam, the relaxation time lies just between the relaxation time of the liquid and the solid. This explains its amazing at first glance properties. If you want to understand the process more deeply, I advise you to read about non-Newtonian fluids.
