First-hand: how was the year on Geektimes

2017 was the year when Giktimes finally found his face and became an adult brother of Habr. Together we watched the exploration and non-exploration of space, met new gadgets, talked about the health of geeks and argued about emigration. And while we did all this, our servers silently wrote accurate and meaningful numbers. We considered everything to tell us how this year was at Giktimes.

In 2017, 5,509 materials were created, of which 5,291 were published. In 2016, there were slightly more publications — 7,374 were created, but only 7,078 were published. For various reasons (zaminusovannye, randomly posted, with violations, etc.), 218 publications , and last year - 296. That is, the percentage of "marriage" on the site was about 4%, which, in fact, is also quite a lot. But in general, users have become kinder - the number of pluses has increased, and the number of minuses has decreased.

Of all the published materials, 124 publications received the mark “Tutorial” (125 in 2016).

Despite numerous requests to add markdown markup (which we addedat the beginning of 2016), for the 2017th year only 214 publications were written in it, that is, only 1.8% of the total number (114 in 2016). We hope that in 2018 we will correct this situation in favor of the WYSIWYG editor, for which we have big plans.

With a decrease in the number of publications in 2017, the total length of records was 59,041,562 characters (in 2016, the figure was 58,856,586). This is approximately 32,801 A4 sheets, that is, almost 66 packs (500 sheets each) or a volume of 3.41 meters thick (based on the thickness of a sheet of A4 paper 0.104 mm). You have probably noticed that there are fewer articles to write in 2017, but their volume has increased. In fact, the amount of content has not decreased - just readers received more voluminous, thoughtful materials. And this trend is well seen as Hiktimes, and on Habré.

If we calculate the average number of characters per publication, then in 2017 the volume of material averaged 10,711 characters, and in 2016 - 7,982 characters, that is, 6 and 4.4 sheets, respectively. It's nice that neither Twitter nor Instagram have spoiled Hiktimes' readers - they still love Longrid and read even sooo long articles (which is confirmed by the results of our survey). And they are so fond that materials with only one video are mercilessly minus. Read useful, do not argue.

    Users

At the time of publication of statistics on Hiktaimes, 673,622 users were registered, of which 117,003 (17.36%) are men, 8,922 (1.32%) are women, and 547,697 (81.3%) are undecided. With such proportions, you involuntarily think about the existence of other forms of life :)

A total of 1966 invitations were issued this year, of which 1889 are users and UFOs, 77 are companies. At the same time, 164 invitations are in a pending state (issued, but not activated). An invitation can hang up for many reasons, but as long as it is not activated, you can always withdraw it and send it to someone who really needs it.

    Hubs and Authors

The most popular hub in 2017 turned out to be the hub “Scientific Popular” (1 106 publications, 78 416 comments), and you can compare the tops for 2016 and 2017 in the tables below. The most concise in 2017 turned out to be publications on the regulation of the IT sector, the longest were the articles on health of the geek, the most rated were articles on space exploration.

Compared to 2016, the Finance hub burst into 6th place at once, and there is an explanation for this: the blockchain, Bitcoin, cryptocurrency and ICO of all stripes, types and quality levels rushed in an endless stream. Pleases one thing - the crypt could not defeat the traditional hiktames hubs.

Our authors are in the lead among our editors who erased keys and wrote news, articles and translations day and night. The leader was markswith 605 publications, not too far behind him alizar with 552 articles (which, by the way, the number of comments on average 101, and rating - 23). Lozga (81 publications) and ragequit (134 publications) pleased us with non-corporate and non-editorial authors all the year with articles on space . Well, is it weak for someone to take and write 100 publications in a year like this?

By the way, the most popular tags turned out to be space, cryptocurrency, blockchain, sound, gadgets, 3d printing, robots, arduino, science fiction, astronautics (if we decide to parse, then we excluded the company name from the leaders of the tags). Almost a tag cloud for everything that happened in the technology world.

    Happy New Year!

The year of the IT specialist (programmer, tester, sysadmin, etc.) is always more than a year - these are new releases, and endless commits, tickets, unintelligible users, nervous days. Such is the situation in this world, that it is the IT environment that has become in many ways to determine what the nearest future will be. Therefore, let us do together the year 2018 so that all technologies and innovations are in the name of good. We, in turn, will try to keep the level, to develop and make Habr and Hiktimes more convenient, more useful and richer.

    Happy New Year!
