Foxconn D51S - The Right Intel Atom D510 Motherboard for Home NAS

Almost two years ago, once again upgrading my computer, I realized that I no longer want to drive it around the clock. Nevertheless, four non-weak processor cores, three hard drives, five gigabytes of RAM and decent jiforsin at that time are a suboptimal configuration for a torrent rocking. And I decided to buy myself a NAS ...

Details of the epic can be found in a long article written in hot pursuitbut in short - I was deeply disappointed in the NAS on ARM-based processors and assembled a small silent computer on a dual-core Intel Atom. I installed Windows XP on it and, in general, that's all. Torrents are downloaded by normal uTorrent, video for PSP and iPhone is pressed by Xvid4PSP and HandBrake, network data is chased by REAL gigabit speed (for home NAS on ARM this interface is present except for beauty), the NAS can be controlled remotely from any system, including not my very favorite Mac - in general, I was very pleased. Especially considering the price of the solution.

But in December new Atoms were announced, and in March the first moms went to them. Considering that the core performance has not improved, no serious sense was found in the upgrade. But for some reason, the opportunity to lower the temperature inside the case by several degrees and save a few watts a day was attractive ... I

thought, thought, and eventually grabbed the Foxconn D51S mother. Why exactly her?

    1) One of the cheapest on the Atom D510 - $ 85. Cheaper is the Intel D510MO ($ 4), but it has a passive heatsink. This is good if the case is relatively large, but nothing more serious than downloading torrents on a computer is done. I sometimes have a video sausage for days on end, and the chance of overheating is quite high. Foxconn has a good cooler - not even a cooler, but a small turbine. At maximum speeds, almost inaudible, at medium speeds not heard at all. This is especially joyful in contrast to my previous mom, Intel DG945GCLF2. There the native cooler squealed like a little impudent pig, and he had to be changed urgently to a small Glacialtech.

    2) There are no bells and whistles, such as HDMI ports and Wi-Fi. For NAS, it is not needed for nothing, but the price is pretty expensive. There is a feeling that the D51S was generally ground for industrial needs, because there is an LPT port and COM. I won’t do a robot-collector of smartphones on my mother, but such a sharpening is very useful for the 24x7 mode.

    3) Gigabit Ethernet. Considering that I recently climbed to the correct router with a gigabit inside , it is not only pleasant, but also useful. However, this advantage is a little strained, because finding a mom with one hundred megabits is not so easy today. But probably.

    4) Two slots for DDR2 memory. There was only one on the old mother. It is clear that such a system does not need gigantic amounts of RAM, but suddenly one day it would be desirable to roll a 64-bit axis ...

In general, happy new thing. Inside the case, where there are two hard drives, it has become colder, and it warms the soul that you are using the latest generation of the desktop “atom”. True, there is a feeling that mothers will soon begin to muddle up on even faster and colder Moorestown, but I think I’ll stay until autumn.

By the way, do not think for advertising, but most turned on Mini-ITX guys sitting in Moscow on www.Dont.ru . Cases, mothers, all sorts of small shnyazhki - nowhere in such quantities you will not find. If anything, send greetings from me to a manager named Taras - he doesn’t like this passion :)
