"You can’t play on laptops" or about ASUS G72Gx

       When you can’t, but really want to, you can;)

    Mythbusters

       Like other laptops, the model of which starts with " G ", the new ASUS G72Gx belongs to the RoG series (Republic of Gamers), that is, it is positioned by the manufacturer as a gaming one. A lot of people still think that there are no gaming laptops, but in this case, manufacturers simply would not pay so much attention to this area. And it has long been known that games are the most powerful engine of progress. And now, let’s close our eyes to stereotypes at least for the time of reading this review and look at the real situation in the world of gaming laptops.

    Spice

       As I accidentally found out, there are several configurations of this laptop, the characteristics of which I tried to collect in the table below. Accordingly, their price will vary greatly (as well as performance). In my particular case, I was talking about the G72GX-TY009V model .

    image

       The computational heart in it is a dual-core processor Intel Core 2Duo T9600 with a clock frequency of 2.8 GHz - this may not be the latest mobile solution from Intel, however, they wouldn't put a bad processor in a new gaming laptop. Looking ahead, the processor was not at all a weak point of a high-performance system!

    In da box

       Inside the huge color box was the laptop itself, the battery, a large network adapter with five (!) Different plugs, and a couple of compacts with various software. Lucky customers, unlike the engineering sample, will also receive the Razer Copperhead gaming mouse and backpack.

    image

    Appearance

       The laptop is quite large (the reason for this is a large glossy screen and productive filling), but less than its peers in the class. Dimensions are 41x30x5.1 (in cm) with a weight of 4 kg with a battery (5200 mAh, 77 W • h, 14.8 V, 8 cells). The network adapter weighs almost a kilogram - I don’t know why it is so huge, but a fact is a fact.

    image

       On the other hand, this laptop can be considered a DTR-system (Desktop Replace), i.e. as a replacement for a huge hospital, but which you can occasionally take with you on the road, if you really can not play.

    image

       Looking at the appearance of the device, the first such involuntary conversation is born involuntarily: “But can I fulfill a masterpiece on a new varnished piano? It seems that this laptop came out relatively recently, and already for half a year I have been swearing in reviews for the ubiquitous gloss. Or are you THERE, you do not read my reviews, hey ?! ":) In general, there is nothing left yet, how to come to terms with this and hope that the era of matte coatings will soon come.

       Actually, the cover of the black case is mostly plastic and glossy, but there is also an aluminum insert on it - a sheet on top of which there is a strip and the RoG logo glowing (in blue) during operation. The cover locks securely onto the lock located on the front panel.

       Under the screen is the Altec Lansing speaker grid- on the left under this grid are two dim blue indicators, and on the right are five chrome buttons, but they light up more clearly. There are only 4 speakers - two under the screen and two on the front; in total, they give a wonderful sound, and quite loud. Nevertheless, the real atmosphere of presence will be felt, probably, only in good gaming headphones.

       One could tell about the elements at the ends with a couple of photographs, but in this case they have a small feature.

    image

       The fact is that some of them (connectors) are hidden behind hinged plugs, so that the laptop in the “assembled” state is pleasantly blowing with minimalism. However, everything is available - HDMI, VGA, FireWire, eSATA, 4xUSB, 3 audio jacks and even ExpressCard. An equally tasty addition is the BluRay drive - the laptop is 200% ready to watch movies.

       The keyboard is full-sized and even with a numeric keypad; the keys have rounded corners and spaces between them. “ Oh, I saw such keys from OTHER manufacturers - isn't it a shame ?! "- there was an exclamation from an impromptu room) I reply to a no less impromptu microphone:" At one time, ASUS made a netbook, after which absolutely everything began to be released - aren't they ashamed?". Agree, weird logic) So in this device it’s just such a keyboard, with divided keys, convenient to ugliness ... and personally I don’t see absolutely anything wrong with the fact that manufacturers adopt from each other the experience of creating convenient and practical things, offering us more and more alternatives when choosing.

    image

    image
       The keys are equipped with white adjustable backlight (Fn + F3 / F4 - combinations that are usually empty on simple models) and typing on them is really very convenient - the keys are small and quiet. The arrows on WASD seem to hint at the game's affiliation - indeed, where can players be without such clues! ) When you press Fn + arrow (at the digital unit), the media center function starts.

       I also liked the touchpad, which in similar (or earlier) models either had some kind of ugly frame, or was heavily sunk in the panel of the case, which only accumulated dust over time. Everything is much more practical here - a large widescreen touch panel (with the texture of convex “dots”) is located directly on the case, and its outline is only outlined by thin blue lines. Under the panel lives one big black button.

       The display also performed with dignity - although it is glossy, but thanks to this it gives beautiful pictures. Viewing angles allow several people to watch a movie simultaneously.

    Toy

       During downtime, the laptop is almost inaudible - if you close your eyes, you will feel some kind of “presence-absence”. When the laptop is under load, the cooler of the video card cooling system makes itself felt (which, perhaps, for the better) - warm air starts to flow from the ventilation holes on the rear panel, and the rumble becomes noticeable. You can hold the laptop on your lap - when loaded, its bottom heats up in one place with a maximum of 47 degrees, the rest is noticeably cooler.

       In 64-bit Windows 7, some tests did not want to work, nevertheless, we managed to get a couple of "parrots" for comparison.

       The system performance index in Windows is 5.9 (rests on the hard drive), all other parameters are 6.4 and 6.8 (out of 7.9 available).

    Actually, here's what can be said about the hard drive:

    If it (or rather, they) had 7200 rpm, the system would be even faster.

       We managed to play again only in Crysis Warhead - there were no other licensed discs at the time of the test. At maximum settings (1600x900 with anti-aliasing), the game went well, although playing in a more gentle mode is even more comfortable. The proof is captured on video;) however, with color rendition through the camera, the trouble is complete. The sound of the game is from the headphones.

       I agree that one game is not proof, but I’m sure that it will be possible to play no less demanding games on the road (I don’t know about you, but I have nothing more interesting than Bubbles on the PDA on the way), in the reading room of the uni or just at home on a cold winter evening.

    Here are the FPS graphics shot by a foreign browser tester:

        This notebook earned no less high scores and praise in the independent comprehensive test of gaming laptops, where the ASUS G72Gx was compared with similar competitors - Dell Alienware M17x , Toshiba Qosmio X500 and MSI GT640 . To avoid comments "Oh well, Alienware has long released laptops on the core i7 ", I advise you to read the article. Along the way - with the prices of these laptops, appearance and size. Here, by the way, is my review of a gaming laptop based on Core i7 and with stereo image support.

    image

       Another review of this device (in English) can be read on Notebookcheck.net - you can’t hide anything from them) Strangely enough, all the same high scores and ratings.

    Since we are talking about gaming laptops from ASUS, here's an interesting video for you:

    image Control weighing

         +Good equipment;
         +Regarding (other gaming laptops) small size and weight;
         +"Mighty" TTX, high performance in games and applications;
         +Many different connectors, overall a nice design;
         +High-quality stereo;
         +The presence of a BluRay drive;
         +Keyboard backlight
         -Glossy case and screen;
         -Big weight (on an absolute scale);
         -Sensible noise of the cooling system under load;
         -Short battery life;
         -High price.

       As for the price - it is noticeably lower than that of competitors with similar configurations, however, at a fairly solid level - from 72,000 rubles per laptop.

    image The end

       Despite the fact that this configuration of the laptop uses far from the latest mobile solution from Intel, the performance of the laptop is at a very high level and overall it came out very balanced. I don’t know about games, but in a couple of years it will be possible to work on such a machine without problems.

    image

       As a rule, those who say that "you can’t play on laptops" just once (in bearded years, for example) tried some kind of abstract gaming piece of iron and since then have lived with old memories, often imposing their opinions on others. Well, or at least they just don’t keep track of new products and at best judge them only by magazine reviews, where you can write anything you want. My article, I think, may well pass for the proof that modern toys go well with mobile solutions.
       Another issue is the price of such games, because gaming laptops are relatively expensive. Here, everyone must decide according to needs and opportunities. Give someone a stationary computer that can be upgraded for a couple of years, and someone a smart laptop that you can always take with you wherever you go.

    Success and spectacular frags.
