A year ago I did a review of the media center, which I later worked on for a whole year - compared to the computer that came before it, it was "heaven and earth." But there was absolutely NO SUCH in the media center - the simplest configuration. Moreover, the compact dimensions of the case did not allow to insert any decent video card into it, so everything that you watched and read in my reviews was created on a generally helpless computer :)

I chose it for only one reason - sufficient performance for me at an adequate price (I did not want to overpay for 295 at least), more or less modern architecture (if necessary, you can buy a second such video card in SLI and certainly last for a couple of years) . I made conclusions about “sufficient performance” from reviews and tests on other sites - I was happy with everything after the purchase. Although no - the only thing that did not suit me was the noise of the standard cooling system (there is a turbine) of the video card in load mode. No, everything is fine with him - for most people this noise level will be very comfortable ... but because I often work at night, the child really did not want to interfere with sleep, especially if we solve the issue. And then I was not psychologically prepared for SVO.
Very soon, I seriously thought about buying an alternative cooling system - the final argument was an interesting article on the Center about the Accelero XTREME GTX 280 system from Arctic Cooling . Judging by the tests, despite three (!) Coolers installed on a large radiator, it worked much quieter than the standard system, while cooling it by an order of magnitude more confident.
They wrote so beautifully that I wanted it. He caught fire and began to search.
About the first stage of the development of events, I inconspicuously wroteon twitter, but because of the continuation of the story I decided to make this post on Habré. Briefly about the first part - I drove the name of the system I needed in the search and quite by accident saw in the results one store with a very attractive price (about 2500r, while everywhere the cooler was sold for 3500-4000). I will not hide it - it was a Coolerok store, upon entering which, I began to look for a place to catch. No website design, layout "on the knee in a notebook", low prices, but reviewsOn the Yandex.market, they’re all positive. The first thoughts were about wrapping up and self-promotion, but, realizing that I was not losing anything, I made an order. Along the way, I ordered thermal grease and a set of small radiators from Thermaltake - the review said that the staff did not hold. A call rang a minute later, the order was confirmed - despite the middle of the afternoon, the device was brought to my dense Moscow Region that very evening. I was very pleased / surprised, after which I flashed a flattering review with a clear conscience .
But then it all started. While reading the review, I completely ignored that the cooler was examined using the 260 GTX video card as an example. There was, of course, the line “ designed to install and cool precisely NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260–285 video cards, ” but ...
... when I started installing it, it turned out that some parts were not suitable, suddenly a couple of extra ones remained, and the radiator sole was much smaller than the heat distribution cover)
Where ours disappeared - with a file and not such can be installed. In addition, small radiators really came in handy - it was proposed to mount the standard ones from the Accelero kit on some kind of thermal plasters that they did not hold at all. When heated, they probably would have stuck ... but you still had to manage to turn it on, until the moment when everything fell off.
In general, I do this and that - even at 100% fan speed (the speed can be manually adjusted), I had more than 100 degrees on the GPU in the load, which should not be. I had to continue working at the media center, and the emerging problem - to solve.
At first I asked friends of overclockers I knew - the versions were very different. Later it turned out that there was insufficient pressure on the radiator to the GPU cover - the metal brackets of the cooler interfered, abutting in a frame around the GPU. Donny was
closest to the truth then , but installing a rather heavy cooler on a printed circuit board without a reinforcing frame (it is removed) is very raw. Yes, and it was almost obvious that the system would not survive because of a compromise - it was impossible to convey these observations in the photos.
Hands did not fall - I began to study the manufacturer's website, manuals. It turned out that the system is suitable for 280 inclusive, and for 285 and higher, the Accelero XTREME GTX Pro system was offered . Which in Russia was not anywhere, because she just got out. He began to bombard the manufacturer and distributors by mail, it turned out that "is about to be on sale." I decided to postpone the file and wait a week to buy a guaranteed compatible unit.
By the way, I was pleasantly surprised - he first appeared all in the same cooler (and at the moment it is sold in only two stores). I really did not want to spend a couple more thousand to buy almost the same cooling system - I wrote to them, they say, like that. Invited to his scoop. It turned out that the world was small - it was a small pavilion, next to the pavilion, where the world-famous overclocker DeDaL worked . Accordingly, the people in the subject - it became clear where they got the news from and why such a low price, why the site is so harsh (there is simply no person for it). But the best part is they agreed to change my cooling system for a new (compatible) one for free, because mine, in fact, was new. For what from the bottom of my heart - THANKS. As a thank you, I bought two radiator-boxes for hard drives from Himuro.
After a couple of minutes, the cooler was installed and tested personally by DeDaL, for which I also personally thank him.
This time everything came up, taking into account the specifics of the board layout. There were radiators for memory, on the power circuit and for something else there. The area of the radiator sole is also less than the area of the heat-distributing cover, but as it is.
In the most vigorous Furmark video test, 40% of the cooler’s capabilities, the temperature was ... I don’t remember exactly which one, but the control of the specialist passed. Now in idle time it is about 35 degrees, while in the load it is not more than 60 (for a regular system, these numbers are approximately 55 and 85 degrees, respectively). Well, the noise from work, judging by the specs, is already as much as 5 times less, although they are bullshit. Noticeably quieter, yes, but you can still hear. By the way, a little later, information about the Accelero 280 GTX cooler was removed from the manufacturer’s website.
In general, everything worked - as it should, as I wanted. Initially, the XFX vidyuha looks beautiful and very compact, but the new cooler is elegant in its own way. For a price in total, it turned out a little less than the cost of 295GTX, but if necessary, you can buy a second 285 - for two 295 the wife would definitely kill)
Although still thoughts like “ Damn, why did I even start all this ?!” After all, it worked, buzzed, cooled, and only spent the money and people strained . ” But how nice it is now to work on a new computer. I occasionally have to work on typewriters of a wide variety of configurations - from netbooks to gaming computers, but all this comes and goes, and compiling a compic for myself, with my soul, is completely different. To compare productivity gains after an old computer (with integrated video), to feel all this in almost all actions - this will not be fully achieved by any of the devices. OS loading, file operations, toys, photoshop - it worked!
Such is the story. For myself, I made some conclusions:
- Initially vidyuha from XFX is good. And while it works, it’s better not to touch it;
- I will carefully read what they write in the articles;
- I will doubly carefully read what they write in specs and manuals;
- The file should be close - sometimes it can come in handy;
- Still, NWO would be more efficient and quieter, but more expensive;
- Sometimes reviews on Yandex.market can be trusted, and paranoia is evil;
- To draw conclusions about the online store by its appearance is stupid.
In fact, he dug a hole for himself - created a problem, exacerbated by his own carelessness. But there was an unpleasant inaccuracy at the Center as well, among other things, which of us is not mistaken.
