Nokia 6700 Classic user test: beauty requires sacrifice

The phone is compact enough, but weighty (113 grams). Subjective sensations in the hand - a pleasant burden. You see the metal in the case and expect that the phone will not be easy. That is what he turns out to be. The metal in the case is quite thick and strong. This is clearly seen in the battery cover. This is not a thin aluminum cap Nokia E52, the metal is completely different. The phone is very well assembled. There are simply no backlashes, creaks, or gaps. If you find fault with a lot, you can see a light gap to the left of the function key block, as well as an imperfect fastening of a plastic insert covering the camera. But this may be specifically in the instance that fell into my hands. Now about the shortcomings. The brightness of the case is monstrous. As soon as the phone falls into his hands, he instantly slams. Even if you wash your hands with soap, anyway, the phone will immediately become covered with fingerprints. From afar, the stained body is not striking, but in the vicinity of the noble brilliance of chrome, it has already happened. You can clean the phone to a mirror shine, but then to save it, you have to use the phone with gloves. Moreover, the entire surface of the phone is covered up - chrome panels, blocks of digital and function keys, and a screen. The black and silver versions, of course, have no such problems, but they also look much simpler than chrome, there is no highlight in them.
There are no complaints about the functional and alphanumeric keys in terms of their basic functions. All keys are well-spaced, have a nice white backlight sufficient to work in the dark, the key symbols are clearly visible, the keys are pleasant, the buttons are well fixed. There are several specific properties to the alphanumeric buttons. If you are a man and do not shave every day, then you will have problems from touching this part of the phone with bristles. The keys simply chew the hairs when the phone moves up the cheek (when moving in the opposite direction there is no such problem). One awkward movement when talking - discomfort is guaranteed. The solution here is quite simple - do not lean the phone against your cheek.
Another inconvenience of the phone is associated with the subtlety of its body. I can’t say that I have huge hands, but there’s almost nothing to hold the phone near my ear. Rounded narrow slippery side faces simply do not allow you to clearly fix the phone in your hand near your ear. You need to either press the phone with your palm to your ear, or grab your fingers around the bottom of the phone. After 6700, I reconsidered my attitude to the fair thickness of my regular Nokia 5800. But a thin phone is much more convenient to carry in your jeans pocket. There it is almost not felt.
Returning to the buttons, you need to dwell on another drawback - the uncomfortable end buttons. There are only 3 of them - “+”, “-” and the camera button. They are all too thin and too harsh. I especially did not like the camera button. Firstly, she has a protective emphasis that protects her from accidental clicks, but in reality she constantly falls under her finger instead of the button itself. The two-position button itself - focus and snapshot. The upper press is soft, but to take a picture, the button will have to be squeezed with all the force. That's what it translates into in practice: you press the focus, and then when you press the “shutter” hard, the phone just twitches, the picture is blurred. In addition, to remove something with one hand is almost impossible.
So that you are not afraid, this is where all the main troubles end. The amenities begin
Although the phone is not very large (2.2 inches diagonally), the AMOLED display is excellent in quality. The colors are juicy. Beautiful pictures on the screen look just great! My only complaint was about the white color, which seemed to me not enough white. Although the screen fades in the sun, everything can be taken apart without any problems. Contrary to popular belief, the dust on the protective transparent plastic that covers the top of the screen did not clog for me in a couple of weeks, although my phone was operated far from ideal conditions.
We also look under the battery cover. Unfortunately, the micro SD card slot (the standard and most common type of memory) is located here, and to remove the card, you have to remove the cover. This procedure, by the way, is also not without difficulties. The shiny metal cover is devoid of any protrusions, so you have to press and pull a smooth polished surface. If your hands are slightly greasy or wet, a tight-fitting lid will not obey you. Included with the phone is a 1 GB card. Under the battery cover, the 960 milliamp battery itself was still lurking. This is the average battery capacity, and it shows fairly average results. In the best case, the device will work for hardly more than 2-2.5 days with minimal use. And this is considering the economical type of screen,

And now we finally got to the inside of the phone. It is commonplace, we have before us the most ordinary device with the Series 40 interface. What didn’t I like after using my beloved 5800? I did not like the fact that the phone does not read the names of callers from the phone book with a voice synthesizer. I also did not like the fact that the phone, although quite flexible in setting, had 1 alarm clock, but most of all I did not like that the phone could neither create nor read long notes, files, texts. It is simply impossible to bring any large textual information into the device. Maybe this can be done with the help of some kind of perversion like creating web pages and opening them through a browser. But then they are perversions that not everyone will want to pervert. And I also didn’t like the fact that in order to unlock the keyboard,
What did I like? I liked the “Asset” menu, where you can put all the necessary useful functions. With such a menu, yes plus with assignable joystick keys and soft keys, no general menu at all is unnecessary! It is not clear why the share on Ovi cannot be removed from the Asset menu. I also liked the fact that when writing a new SMS, the recipient does not have to be pulled out of the phone book, but you can get the last recipients from the short list, or from the list of favorite recipients, or from the call log. But even here there is no perfection in the world. For example, when creating a list of favorite recipients, SMS will try to send by default to all participants in the list. Or, when choosing a recipient from the call log, all the numbers there are piled up without indicating whether you called or called you. I also liked the fact that with the green button you get not into the list of last dialed numbers, but into the list of all calls from their log (both dialed, received, and missed). Here everything is perfectly marked with icons - beautiful and clear! In general, there are no special complaints to the interface of the phone book, call log and SMS messages, everything has been done quite thoughtfully and conveniently.
The device has no complaints about the quality of communication. Confident reception, the interlocutor is heard well. Here the 6700 has complete order.
Let's get into the multimedia features of the device. The greatest strength here is the camera. It is not just 5 megapixel, it is really very good among other cameras of mobile phones. Of course, good shots are obtained only during the day and only on the street. Indoors and at dusk, the camera just gets lost and ceases to give out something intelligible, similar to a photograph. Autofocus misses are very frequent in the room, and the phone’s flash is quite small and it’s not too powerful. It also seemed to me that in the photographs there is a bias in the white balance to blue. It, as well as contrast and color saturation, can be adjusted in Photoshop. Unfortunately, in many cases the quality of the camera is leveled out by the unsuccessful photography button, which I already wrote about above. You can take pictures with the central button of the joystick, but autofocus will not work then.
sample photo (the link is the original photo): It is interesting that the phone provides the possibility of getting from the camera to preview photos. And here the photos are presented not by a list with sketches and names, as in the gallery, but only by a matrix of sketches. The camera settings are rather poor, which is surprising for such a good camera. In addition to the usual photo quality, you can only adjust white balance and brightness. There are also effects. The camera also shoots a decent enough quality video format of 640 by 480 pixels. The main drawback is the 3gp format, and not the now generally accepted mp4. this affects both the quality of the video and the further use of clips (3gp format is quite universal).
It is very convenient that the camera and camcorder are separated into separate labels. This greatly speeds up the launch.
The photo gallery in the phone is combined with the internal file manager. There are no specific functions in it. A small sketch, file name, file size and shooting date are shown in the list of photos. Scaling is not very convenient.
You can watch videos on the phone, and, most surprisingly, the 6700 digested without problems and showed a video clip of the mp4 format in 640x480 resolution (this is with a screen of 320x240 pixels) and high bitrate, which I encoded for 5800. But now I don’t think that anyone it would come to mind to watch a movie on such a fairly microscopic screen. Still it remains a mystery to me, why is it possible to use the video player in the background?
The phone also has a regular player, but equipped with all the necessary functions. He also has playlists, including automatic ones (by artist, album, genre), there is an equalizer, random play and play in a circle. There is only one external speaker in the phone. He yells decently, even with a margin of volume, but the sound can not be called pleasant - the usual screaming speaker of a regular phone. The sound quality in the headphones remained a mystery to me. The phone does not have a standard 3.5 mm headphone output. There is only 2.5 mm. and shitty headphones, in which listening to music is simply criminal, but I didn’t find any good headphones with a 2.5 mm jack, nor an adapter to a standard jack.
Of the additional features, it is worth canceling the radio receiver and GPS receiver that works with Nokia Maps. Out of the box, several games and several Java applications designed to exchange information through online services are installed on the phone. For verification, all these applications are nothing more than bookmarks in a standard browser. There are no interesting applications on the phone.
Let's try to summarize some of the results.First of all, Nokia 6700 Classic is an image-oriented solution focused on a person who uses mainly telephone functions. The phone is certainly beautiful, stylish, fashionable, glamorous ... Of the shortcomings, I would most of all note the unimaginably sloppy look in which the phone resides most of the time. Agree, for the image tube is quite a serious drawback. Another strong point is the built-in camera, though with rather poor settings and a disgusting focus / shoot button. It is on these 2 strengths that you should focus your attention on potential buyers. The rest is a strong middle peasant - an ordinary handset that can do a lot, but almost everything - with significant limitations. If you need a high-quality functional audio / video center, then the 6700 is unlikely to be your ideal choice. It’s worth a look at other options. But what can be said for sure is that there are a lot of functional tubes, but there are only a few really beautiful devices. So the issue of 6700 will not go unnoticed, which already confirms the active interest of buyers and sales results.
