12 teraflops desktop supercomputer

    Fastra ii

Engineers from the Belgian University of Antwerp showed the light of their compact supercomputer Fastra II. Outwardly, it is an ordinary system unit, but it truly contains tremendous computing power of 12 teraflops.

The system is equipped with a 2.66 GHz Core i7 processor, as well as six dual-processor Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 and a GeForce GTX 275 card with one graphics chip. Thus, the supercomputer received 13 powerful graphics chips, which in combination with NVidia CUDA technology allowed to achieve great performance.
According to the creators, Fastra II is almost four times faster than its predecessor, the first Fastra model based on four NVIDIA 9800GX2.
The computer runs on an ASUS P6T7 WS motherboard, with 12 GB of RAM and 1 TB on the hard drive, and also uses 5 power supplies: one for 1500 W and four for 450 W. The operating system was CentOS Linux.
The system plans to find application mainly in medicine, where using X-ray images it is possible to create a three-dimensional model of human bones and organs, which will make it possible to more accurately diagnose diseases.
The computer cost the creators at a cost of less than 6,000 euros.
