Brakes in Snow Leopard
If you upgraded to Snow Leopard and your computer started to crash terribly (horribly!), Then I seem to know what your (and once my) problem is.
And the problem is in coreaudiod. Coreaudiod is the sound API in OSX. It happens that coreaudiod begins to occupy all the free RAM. In my case, out of 4GB of RAM, 8-10MB remained free right after the system booted. The solution is simple - remove plist at the address: System / Library / LaunchDaemons / com.apple.audio.coreaudiod.plist, reboot and voila - everything works fine :).
It is strange that this glitch in 10.6.1 did not solve.
UPD Let's not breed holivar from scratch. This is just a special case, I thought that the solution I found could help someone. This situation is not so easy to recreate, and it is probably not entirely correct to draw conclusions about any shortcomings of OS X on its basis.
