Today is 10 years since the release of the cult game System Shock 2

Games which is rightfully one of the worst games of the twentieth century. I think it’s not me alone who shuddered from each rustle making his way through the dark corridors, counting each cartridge and each first-aid kit. And in places even sketching passages or scouring the entire level in search of parts when recorded on the walls in different parts of the level.

So, the history of the System Shock Universe begins in 1994, when the little-known (at that time) office Looking Glass Studios publishes the System Shock Game (1), which turned all representations in general and the concept of "shooter" in particular, against the background of "rattling" at that time Doom bloody shooter popularity. The coup was primarily the presence, in contrast to the typical dull "shooters", an interesting plot, which not only dragged the player into the world of horror, the hopelessness of the Citadel station, captured by the brilliant crazy AI SHODAN, not only kept it in constant tension, but also made everyone think constantly take your step and often rely on logic to solve quests and passing the game.

And now after 5 years comes the continuation. The redesigned DarkEngine engine (a legacy from Thief), high-poly textures of creatures and characters (for that time), a beautiful and user-friendly interface, new features (for example, the appearance of psi-magic, replicators) - all this cannot and should not leave indifferent those gamers who were fortunate enough to pass the First System Shock. And the main difference between Continuation and the first part was the appearance of the so-called RPG elements. RPG (Rolling-Play Game) - from the English "Role-playing game" - this is a game with a character having some basic characteristics and skills, as well as experience points. As you progress through quests, the character gains points (in this game, cyber modules) that allow him to pump (i.e. improve) certain characteristics (exclusively at the request of the player), which, depending on the chosen tactics of passing, they should help in overcoming obstacles and completing the quest part of the game. The RPG component in System Shock2 is not as pronounced as in “Fallout”, so the Game genre is better not called pure RPG, but three-dimensional Action with elements of role-playing game.

Briefly, the plot of the game is as follows: 42 years after the events of System Shock 1, Tri-Optima Corporation, with the support of the United Nations Nominee UNN, creates and sends the Von Braun spacecraft into its first Superlight (FTL) flight. The idea of creating an FTL engine belongs to M. Delacroix, who received the Nobel Prize and the position of Chief Design Engineer on the ship. The safety of the ship was to be ensured by the destroyer Rickenbaker docked to it, under the command of WB Diego, the son of E.Diego, who was responsible for the tragedy of the Citadel station in 2072. A. Korenechkin, a greedy and greedy UNN official who did not have much flying experience and was promoted to high command for political reasons, was appointed captain of Von Braun himself. The main role in the game is assigned to a simple soldier, who, 4 years before the start of the flight, VB entered the service of UNN as a space infantryman and underwent 4-flight training. Taken in flight and serving on the destroyer Rickenbaker as a simple security officer, he agreed to an operation to implant a neural-cybernetic interface at the suggestion of Dr. J. Polito, who headed the ship’s computer center. Upon awakening, the soldier found himself already a cyborg man, partially losing his memory of recent events and, to his horror, found out that the vast majority of the crew had died or turned into terrible mutant hybrids, while a new life form unknown to earth science appeared on the ship. Fortunately, Dr. Polito could contact him, who said that a soldier should certainly meet with her in her personal account on Deck 4 of the ship.
When you get to Polito’s office and what consequences it will lead to, you’ll have to find out by going through this magnificent and ingenious game, recognized as one of the best in the 20th century 3D-Action games in the first person with RPG elements.

Fans of this game are still creating various mods that improve the textures and models of the game, sounds, correct errors and gameplay. The craftsmen taught the game to run on win XP and on many processor machines. Is this not proof of the success of the game?

On the eve of the anniversary of the game, I installed it for passing through and again flinched from sad monologues of ghosts or from sudden collapse) and someone from the NPC even knew about the first part of the game))

By the way, the game is included in the IGN rating "The most terrible games of all time."
The localization of this game is also one of the best works of the Fargus studio, therefore its Russian version is very well played and voiced at a very decent level.

At the end of 2005, the Open Dark Engine project was launched, with the goal of creating an engine based on Ogre, capable of launching games based on the Dark Engine (in particular, system shock2). The last revision by the way for the fifth of this month ...

Have you played yet? It’s time to try, but get ready ... I passed 75% of the time running with a gas key as the main weapon, and not because a maniac, but because there are catastrophic ammunition and weapons, but there is no skill in using it and you either can’t use it either a huge return and delay when shooting. But the remaining 25% of the time I pumped up an exotic weapon and ran with a blue laser rapier "a la Jedi". And do not forget to pick up everything you see, any garbage will always come in handy, even if it's just worms ... And if you decide to play for the first time, be sure to install textural and model mods for the game, the game will become more lively and more modern. Well? Getting started?
