For the first time this phenomenon was thoroughly described in 1944 by the American zoophysiologist Theodor Schnereyla, who gave him the name death mill, because the ants continue their run until they fall dead and the carousel of death continues its rotation until the participants are completely exhausted, leaving behind them hordes of dead ants.
One of his most impressive examples was observed in Guyana in 1921 by the American naturalist William Beebe.
He described an anthill that made up a circle with a diameter of about 120 meters and each ants completed a complete cycle in 2.5 hours. The ant circle lasted 2 days, dotting the ground under itself with dead bodies, until a small group of working ants accidentally separated from the general movement and led away the survivors ...
