What's New in WordPress 2.8
For me personally, the list of new features and edits that will appear in WordPress 2.8 was not a strong revelation .
People who were surprised when they found out that there was such a list were more surprised.
It is not difficult to guess that you can find a list of innovations on the official website .
So, version 2.8 will include both new features and the correction of errors and shortcomings found.
Here are some interesting news in my opinion:
- Support for custom taxonomy (In addition, this is almost the main change in WP 2.8, at least there was a lot of emphasis on it. You can read more about taxonomy in WP on maxsite.org and blog. sjinks.org.ua);
- Improving the interface "Widgets";
- A new order (mechanism) for installing themes;
- Alteration of the master of import from LJ;
- Using SimplePie technology to broadcast rss feeds in the admin panel and widgets;
- Improvement of the “Publish this” technology (a java-script link is placed in the personal panel for quick publication of interesting pages found on the Internet);
- Revised filter parameters for XSS attacks;
- Improved search for plugins through the admin panel;
- Autosave draft when you press Control / Command + S (Ctrl + S);
- Canceled confirmation request when marking a comment as spam;
- During installation, improved verification of administrator e-mail;
- Added checking for new versions when visiting in the admin panel Tools-> Upgrade;
- Added syntax highlighting in the editor for Themes and Plugins;
- Painted icons in the menu in the admin panel (Yes, yes, yes! The most important innovation!) ;
- Added a screen option to change the number of items in the posts, comments, pages manager.
- Improving and optimizing the work with the database;
- Increased script performance;
In addition, the version of jQuery, which is included by default in the installation package, has been updated to jQuery 1.3.1.
Innovations that were supposed to appear in WP 2.7, but did not appear:
- Menu Editor (as far as we understand we are talking about the menu in the Admin panel);
- Record type “Gallery”, as well as additions to template tags for creating a gallery;
- Versions of template edits in the Theme Editor + documentation binding to template tags when editing the theme;
- Download and install themes through the user interface;
- Adding the ability to block all outgoing HTTP requests.
These are far from all the changes and innovations, mainly those that more or less deserve attention.
At the same time, for some points, one only has to guess what the creators actually realize. For example, the word “new mechanism” of setting the themes does not, unfortunately, give any idea what exactly they will change or whether they will radically change ...
What can I say?Based on the above points, one can easily notice the focus of WP on an ordinary user who, without leaving the Admin panel, could configure and modify his blog. With the proper level of implementation of the on-line editor of themes and plugins, the need to use FTP will be extremely rare.
On the other hand, in the 21st century it is quite normal that all the necessary manipulations can be done through the web interface without working directly with files.
If this goes on, I would like to see a web install.
Now the most important question - is it worth the rush to upgrade? As always, the answer is simple - decide for yourself.
Personally, I will be updated, but not on the first day, but only by looking closely at the new version on LAN.
