Is Apple preparing its own search engine?

The well-known TechCrunch resource this week asked an interesting question : is Apple preparing its own search service? Receiving numerous messages with a similar question, it would be strange for the journalists of the resource not to try to figure out the current situation. Which they did, and I, in turn, am presenting this information to you in a slightly adapted form.

At first glance, the idea of creating a search engine by the Yabloko does not seem so crazy. Safari browser currently has 6-7% of the market, and all iPhone / iPod Touch owners use Google search by default. In addition, Mobile Me subscribers also have a fairly powerful set of tools, using which thousands of people return to the server dozens of times daily. All this traffic and tools, as a rule, translates into millions of search queries that can be effectively monetized.

Further, Apple probably can’t but rejoice at the fact that Google now owns its own Android mobile platform, which means it is in direct competition. Google CEO Eric Schmidt, who also sits on the board of directors of Apple, is not present at discussions of Apple’s mobile strategy, for what reasons - I think it’s clear, in order to preserve trade secrets.

The only fad that does not converge under any circumstances is a simple fact: if Apple were preparing a search engine, they would fiercely recruit search experts and engineers. TechCrunch interviewed several dozens of prominent employees of large companies and concluded: the same rumors reached some of them, but none of the companies left employees specifically at Apple, and the most valuable personnel were not lost. At the same time, it was not heard about the admission of famous (in the search field) persons at Apple. This fact alone plays a serious role: "it is impossible to make a product without people who know how to do it correctly." Another thing is if such specialists are already available and carefully hide somewhere in the bowels of Apple.

Apple, among other things, is very fond of the percentage of “search margin” monthly transferred from Google for dollars earned on Safari users. In addition, the Yabloko people are obviously not busy in the search and advertising field today, so even if a certain search engine were launched, it is unlikely that you can bite off at least any noticeable piece of the Google market or its competitors. So why invest huge capital in a search?

It is for this reason that the answer to the question in the headline sounds like: "No." But rumors continue to spread stubbornly and I would like to believe that they have a reasonable grain of truth. The guys at TechCrunch even suggested that they were actually hiding behind this mountain of misunderstandings and misunderstandings: Apple is not very satisfied with the current state of the search on their mobile devices and, for this reason, is preparing a new / changed UI that is more convenient for working with search. And this, with a probability of 99%, will again be built on the basis of the Google engine.
