Application-rich Web

    Abstracts and presentation “Web saturated with applications” (it is recommended to read and leaf through slides in parallel) shown at the CIB-2008 conference:

    1. Question to the audience: Who knows what OpenID is? And who has OpenId? // more than a third of the audience raise their hand
    2. Who knows what the Semantic Web is? // more than a third of the audience raise their hand
    3. Who knows what DataPortability is? // raise their hand a little more than a dozen
    4. The sites on which we set up our accounts are scattered like islands in the ocean
    5. The DataPortability initiative calls for the convenience of Internet services for users, namely the possibility of convenient use of their data when surfing the net.
    6. Instead of filling out profiles, uploading the same photos and adding friends, you can and should use open standards and protocols, such as RSS, OpenID, OPML, APML, OAuth, RDF, all kinds of microformats.
    7. From this there is a benefit for the Internet service. Instead of pushing competitors to duplicate functionality, you can act as a platform that other services will use, simplifying your life, but at the same time becoming your customers and partners.
    8. And users will safely leave you personal data if the platform is convenient and deserves trust.
    9. The closed nature of most Internet projects leads to the emergence of programs that “pick out” data from web pages. For example: openkapow, dapper and others (see tools for mashups)
    10. Therefore, be a platform!
    11. There are two interesting trends in the development of the web: Semantic Web and Service-Oriented Architecture. SemWeb focuses on metadata and relationships, and SOA on interaction interfaces and functionality. Most likely they will go side by side, intersecting in the future.
    12. The last question for the audience “to think about: where is the most promising application assembly: in the mashup or in the browser?

    I also want to share with you the results of the brainstorming session that I conducted on KIB:
    • Despite the poorly populated beginning, it was possible to collect as many as 3 groups of assaults;
    • each group had to come up with a new interesting service. Naturally, many ideas were born in each group, but all the participants had to present only one most promising idea;

    I will briefly describe the ideas that were presented after a 15-minute discussion.

    The first and largest group offered a service for describing contact information for companies that answered the question “how to get?”. The service will determine the current location of the requestor and issue a detailed description of the path to the office of the company. Both a map and a text description will be offered, indicating where to turn and which minibus to take.

    The second group presented a service that combines a gaming racing software console, a real track and a website with broadcasts and competitions. The essence of the idea: participants can remotely participate in races. To do this, they buy a specific model for themselves and can control it, as in a simulator, but at the same time, the image is transmitted to the screen with a video camera installed in the machine. Therefore, the race is absolutely real. It is possible to arrange sweepstakes, ratings, prizes to winners on the site. Perhaps offline monitoring and participation.

    The third group offered a recommendation service. The portal will cultivate a community of experts on various topics. Ordinary users will be able to ask questions or read existing recommendations on goods and services. Users can also lower or increase the rating of experts, thereby improving the quality and integrity of experts.
    • Further, all three groups were asked to choose one of these three ideas and refine it.

    As a result, the first two groups finalized the “contact information” service (focusing on the possibility of calling a contact number directly through the site and on building routes). And the third group continued to refine the recommendation service.

    Despite the fact that projects like the first and third service already exist, many interesting features and ideas were born in the discussion. And the reality racing service seems to be only in a few years.
