About IT Education

There were several topics in the hubr one way or another connected with IT-education. I want to share my thoughts and experience.

    Foreword

I am 18 years old, I am a student of one of the largest Ural universities. I study exclusively in the humanities, I didn’t succeed in doing something technical because of my poor knowledge of mathematics.
It so happened that from childhood I was fascinated by computers. Of course, I did not find the great Geek time of the Spectrum, my first car was the second Pentium. Unfortunately, my relationship with mathematics did not work out even in the elementary grades of the school. For this, we must thank one extremely unprofessional teacher who discouraged any interest in this subject from me. In addition, I was never an excellent student, always studied at 3-4. We had computer science at school, but I did not get really useful and new knowledge there. Yes, we “studied” Pascal and html, but only a couple of classes were dedicated to them, and even at that moment I could give odds to my teacher. At school, I had no idea who I would work in the future.

My children's curiosity and the availability of a modem did the trick. Like any teenager, I surfed the Internet very intensely in search of all kinds of nishtyaks. I wanted to know how this whole system works. So I found out about web servers, dns, protocols (http and TCP / IP transport). Those. made up the basic presentation. My curiosity, at this stage, was satisfied. Further, for some reason I was interested in the device of the sites. Having got acquainted with html (oh, then the whole runet was "tabular" and no one even thought about web standards, block layout) and js I got into programming. My first language was PHP =). Apparently this is a consequence of its popularity and low entry threshold. Now I certainly understand that php is not the best option, but it happened and nothing can be changed. At that moment, my knowledge of programming, as in discipline, were minimal. Quickly realizing that nobody would chew anything on phpclub and ru_php, I downloaded the manual to php and asked my parents for money from books (Koterov, “php programmer’s handbook”). Having studied php and a little MySQL with their help, I decided to try my hand. Having found a free hosting with the features I need, I made my home page. There was a terrible design, a poor tabular layout and nasty, leaky scripts. But I was madly proud of myself =) Then the idea to create a game portal came to my young head. My acquaintance with various CMS of average lousiness took place. It was decided to sculpt his product. A simple system was written quite quickly, the design was stolen - the portal worked. He even had a constant audience and attendance in the region of 50-60 unique people per day. By supporting and developing this project, I acquired new skills: valid layout and standards, initial knowledge in OOP. There is no point in telling further. Since then, a lot of time has passed, many different projects were born and died. Now I am quite a successful freelancer, behind my back are good, solid projects. I own python and php, study rub; I can raise the lamp and successfully administer this bundle. I do not earn much, but I have enough for various youth joys and for partial payment of the institute. I want to fully devote myself to IT. I own python and php, study rub; I can raise the lamp and successfully administer this bundle. I think it’s clear that I’m pure self-taught. I don’t want to be an IT craftsman all my life, I need to develop. My problem is that I rested on my ceiling. I lacked serious theoretical training, and I was forced to admit that I could not afford to get it without outside help. This knowledge can really be given only by an institution. Perhaps I am not entitled to give any advice, but still I will give one. If a young man wants to work in the field of IT, then he can go the same way as me. But in the end, he will have a few superficial knowledge and will become a craftsman. There is nothing wrong with that; such personnel are in demand; quite normal money can be earned from this. But for something more technical education is needed. Yes, educational programs are out of date. Yes, the educational system, to put it mildly, does not keep abreast of events. But it seems to me that there are basic things that are always relevant. Going to a university, you will get a lot of rubbish, husks, but at the same time useful knowledge that is very difficult to obtain at home. If you have a desire to receive new knowledge, then you can also extract useful information from a university course. In addition, the university is new acquaintances, new people. Who knows, maybe you will find like-minded people among teachers and students. Everyone should decide what to do, but if you want to study and be a true professional in your field, then you cannot do without a higher technical education. Naturally, there are exceptions to each rule, in this case they are extremely talented and assiduous people, but this only confirms the rule. PS Sorry for some naivety and confusion, this is my first experience in writing such materials =)
