All-in-One Card Readers from Transcend and Kingston

The other day, information appeared on the Web about two rather interesting devices at once - card readers, which you should definitely pay attention to by the owner of an impressive collection of flash cards of various formats. One of the gadgets - Kingston Media Reader (with the "inventory" number FCR-HS219 / 1), is extremely functional, supporting 19 types of flash drives. The second one is Transcend's M5, which can not only work with cards of a huge number of formats (there are 19 of them, like the Kingston product), but it also pleases with a nice and stylish design.

The addition to the Kingston Technology family of “media readers” has dimensions of 92 × 69 × 20 mm and weighs 71 grams, is equipped with a USB 2.0 interface and works with Windows 2000, XP and Vista operating systems (not enough). It is worth highlighting the presence in the delivery set of the device of two cables: short (10 cm) for connecting to a laptop and extension (about a meter).

As already mentioned, the main advantage of Kingston Media Reader FCR-HS219 / 1 is its support for 19 different types of flash cards. Here is the full list: CompactFlash Type I and II, SD, SDHC, miniSD, miniSDHC, microSD, microSDHC, MMC, MMCmobile (DV RSMMC), MMCplus, MMCmicro, RS-MMC, Microdrive, Memory Stick Micro (M2), Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick Duo and Memory Stick PRO Duo.

    The FCR-HS219 / 1 All-in-One price is $ 17.

As for the Transcend product, called the M5, it is not only functional, but also looks very attractive in appearance. The device boasts compactness (dimensions 70 × 70 × 15 mm) and a stylish case (also the colors are different - white and red or, as Transcend indicates, pink and ivory).

Unlike FCR-HS219 / 1, this device works not only with 2000, XP and Vista, but also with Windows 98SE / Me, Mac OS 9.x (and higher) and Linux Kernel 2.4 (and higher). Among the supported card formats there is a new standard MMC4.0. To give a complete list of formats does not make sense, because of the coincidence with that of Kingston Media Reader FCR-HS219 / 1.

The cost of this device (on the manufacturer’s website, excluding taxes) is $ 14.
