New life of the old radio. Part 2: linux?
I refused the idea of making a docking station out of a radio . Still, I decided to collect the PC. I hasten to upset you, but this is again an unfinished worklog. I want to consult first.
But first, a little about what happened at the moment. Inside exclusively standard accessories. Motherboard mATX, Sempron 3Ghz, 1Gb RAM, GF7600GS, 250Gb HDD + 320GB temporarily in the same place. A PCI network card also temporarily lives there (the built-in has not yet made friends with Linux). An IR receiver is ugly attached to the lid with tape. This is temporary. It's just that the receiver is not mine.
As you noticed here, there is not enough DVD-drive (I hooked it for a while with this terrible IDE cable). Inserting the usual is problematic - the processor cooler interferes. I think to insert an external one ( there are quite compact ones ).

All my work was to cut out the extra partitions. The only difficulty was pushing the USB ports into the switches on the front (2 right). The radiol turns on, as expected, with the red button. The tuning knob temporarily works with an 8mm power button. fan located behind vidyuhi. One day she will turn into a fanbass. Unfortunately, one of the front “twists” was not there, but I’m thinking of inserting a microphone input there. I didn’t have a camera when I was engaged in radio, so I can’t show the working moments :-( All the iron got up very well. True, I had to change the vidyuha (mine had a huge radiator). It’s scary at the back. But don’t forget that it’s still beta version.

Of course, I understand that USB extension cords instead of the normal system, when the front connectors are plugged into the motherboard, it’s not hard, but my hands do not yet reach to remake. :-)
I’m going to replace the elements of the Soviet designer with something more aesthetic. They are needed here because I had to remove the standard mount, where both parts of the radio are fastened with screws.
Everything is normal with the temperature inside. The screws do not heat above 40 degrees, the percentage is not higher than 55, and the additional fan for vidyuhi should be turned on only during games.
Noise is harder. In general, it is not very noisy, but after the Mac Mini it is still noticeable. The noisiest component was ... the screw! Against it, the Thermaltake TR2-R1 processor for 300 rubles is almost inaudible. I hope that with the replacement of the screw (and it’s time already) this problem will be solved. And to solve other problems, I need your help.
Three problems:
1. I was going to cram columns there. There are still small laptop computers . They get in close to it. Is it worth it? Will there be a tip? How sound do they sound? Maybe it’s better to get along with the external ones?
2. Which screw should I put in order to be quieter? I think I can’t find it at 5000 turnover.
3. The most serious problem is software. While I look towards mythTV (especially since the recent acquaintance with Linux turned out to be more than positive not only for me, but also for a couple of my friends), but it does not impress me externally (I want something a la AppleTV) , and I absolutely can not imagine what you can play with the gempad under Linux (sometimes you want to play). And further. Is there any software for configuring the remote control (defined in Windows as a HID-compatible device), a la HIP?
In general, I will be glad to any links to interesting sites / articles about Linux. In addition to ENT, I don’t really know anything.
Something like that. I wrote this article being terribly tired, so don’t kick much, but otherwise I would not be going to write another month. I plan to finish this miracle only after moving to a new apartment, where I want to somehow fit the radio into the interior. So I don’t even dream about her appearance. Anyway, I haven’t been doing it yet, since all my free time is spent studying Linux. :-)
I really hope for your good advice.
PS: A suitable TV set is needed for the Radeole. Of course, some "Horizon" would look cool, but still I want a 32 "HD-Ready LCD. Can you advise something to suit the style?
PPS: Sometimes there is a desire to paint it black and try to make it glossy. With on the one hand, it will look cool, on the other, can preserve the "natural beauty"?
