Spam in Excel spreadsheets

Commtouch Software , an anti-spam product company , discovered spam with an embedded Excel spreadsheet on July 21. "Left" messages promoted stocks in applications with names such as invoice 20202.xls, stock information-3572.xls and requested report.xls.

Fraudsters operating under the “pump and dump” scheme, using a new type of spam, illegally promote stocks, increasing their value, then they sell them and get profit from it.

Amir Lev (Amir Lev) from Commtouch says that this innovation signaled the appearance of spam with other formats and is expected to appear unsolicited emails with attachments PowerPoint-presentations or Word documents. Using such attachments bypasses spam filters that use content analysis.
