Sony BMG came to Runet with music
Denis Komarovsky, managing director of the Sony BMG Russian office, said that negotiations are currently underway with the online music stores Janga !, Mp3.ru and AudioFind. If they succeed, stores will have access to the Sony BMG archive and will sell music at a price of $ 0.5-0.6 per track, Kommersant reports .. It is not yet known what the volume of sales will be, in addition, it does not disclose how the parties are going to share the revenue. All that is known - 100 thousand music tracks and about 5 thousand video clips will be offered to Russian Internet users.
There are obvious explanations for the fact that a major Western player is entering the Russian market right now. First, on September 1, amendments to the law "On Copyright and Related Rights" entered into force, introducing the Internet into the field of law, Denis Komarovsky explained. Secondly, legal online stores appear in the country. However, until now, licensing agreements have been concluded only with Russian copyright holders and independent foreign labels (for example, Orchard).
Experts pointed out some points that impede the penetration of Western giants into the Russian online music market. “When distributing its catalog, Sony BMG will adhere to secure file formats, for example, vmi, which is less common in Russia than mp3,” says mp3.ru owner Sergey Zhukov. He added that Runet shop owners will have to play according to the rules of international copyright holders. The domestic resource is now trying to adapt the technical requirements of Sony BMG to Russian conditions, and this is delaying the launch of sales.
“Until now, majors could not agree with any of the resources, and the main obstacles were the price, the content protection system and the restriction of the distribution to the RU zone,” says Dmitry Ugrenovich, director of the National Association of Phonogram Producers. However, in spite of this, there are predictions that after the “first swallow” others will be pulled.
Kommersant reports that EMI Gala-records and Universal Music are also negotiating sales on the RuNet. Market participants understand that legitimate sales through the Russian Internet directly depend on the coordination of their actions. “A legal service will be competitive if it has all the majors, and not just, for example, Sony BMG and we, because the consumer is interested in the widest possible offer on one site,” said Alexander Blinov, CEO of EMI Gala-records.
