Over the past 4 years, FBI employees have lost at least 160 laptops. Such data are published in the report of the US Department of Justice ( pdf ).
All of these computers were lost or stolen. At least 10 of them contained top-secret information, and one contained information about the personal data of FBI employees. It is also known that only one of the lost laptops used cryptography to protect data.
Compared with 2002 (when a similar report was published then), the FBI worked on the safety of its equipment: in a previous report, 317 lost laptops were reported in 28 months, 17 of which were stolen.
