South Korean company technologies used illegally in MS Office
On Friday, November 24, the Supreme Court of South Korea issued a ruling recognizing that Microsoft illegally used technology licensed by South Korean company P&IB in the MS Office software package. Several patents owned by P&IB describe the process of automatically switching languages from English to Korean when entering texts.
“Microsoft has adapted our technology for its office software suite, while stating that our original development is ineffective,” says P&IB President Kim Kil-hae; his words are quoted by The Korea Times . “However, the court ruled in our favor. Thanks to this decision, we can easily win the lawsuits that are currently pending before the Seoul Supreme Court. ”
The South Korean company expects to receive $ 75 million in compensation, as well as forcing Microsoft to suspend the sale of MS Office in the country until the development company removes patented technologies from its programs.
A lawyer for the Microsoft office in Korea promises to file a lawsuit demanding annulment of the current court decision.
