Technological Systems (TS), a subsidiary of Comstar-OTS, received licenses worth $ 0.8 million for the provision of WiMax services in Ukraine in the frequency range of 5.4-5.7 GHz. According to Prime-TASS , TS licenses are valid in the territory of Kiev, Odessa, Lviv and the regions adjacent to these cities.
“The obtained licenses enable the TS to deploy wireless access networks in the largest business centers of the country, including those cities where the installation of fiber-optic cables is not allowed due to historical, architectural and geographical features,” say Comstar-UTS. “The development of the WiMax network will circumvent these restrictions.”
According to Kommersant, while WiMax services in Ukraine are offered only by one company - Ukrainian Latest Technologies (Alternet TM). Experts predict that Golden Telecom and Intelligent Communications will come to this market in the near future.
Last year, according to IKS-Consulting, Ukraine’s broadband market amounted to about $ 114 million (2.5 times less than Moscow) with an Internet penetration rate of 1.6% of the total number of households in the country with an annual increase of 20-30% .
