5 million domains in the ORG zone
The 5 millionth domain is registered in the ORG zone, according to the ORG administrator, PIR (The Public Internet Registry). The domain is popular among non-profit organizations and public projects, as well as among trademark owners.
To attract as many interested parties as possible to the ORG domain, PIR has helped lower registration fees in regions such as South America, Asia, and Africa since the summer of 2005. As a result, according to Edward G. Wiltz, president of the company, the number of registrations worldwide has increased by more than 25%.
For comparison: the COM domain today has about 56 million second-level domains, in the NET zone - over 8 million domains.
