Google vs. Microsoft

On Thursday, November 30, I was at the HSE at a meeting with Vsevolod Leonov , Head of Microsoft MSN Business in Russia, and Vladimir Dolgov, Google-Russia CEO . Vsevolod came earlier, sat down on the table and was completely not interested in talking about the arrival of a new player on the Russian market. Snobbery emanated from him, and ironic notes were heard from time to time in his voice. About Yandex, the MSN leader said that the leader of the Russian search is not our competitor. “We will not search, but implement various services, such as MSN and Windows Live .” The general impression of this unnecessary speech was that they sent a Microsoft trinket to have an opponent with Google.

Vladimir Dolgov lingered by the beginning of the event. Leonov even tried to pin him, that "they say Microsoft is late everywhere, but here it is: Google, it turns out no better." The debate that began, Dolgov quickly stopped: "I got here on the cards provided by Microsoft." Although, I personally do not recall such.
The presentation of Google began (namely, the presentation on PowerPoint, and not the boring Microsoft voice), and the speaker spoke very interestingly.

All of Google started on 15 computers. The idea of Larry Page and Sergey Brinconsisted of the following: upload the entire Internet to your computers and optimize information. To their great regret, the Internet was growing much faster than they had time to download it to themselves. Then they came up with a search script that searches for new sites and puts them in a special registry. Instead of 15 computers, Google now has 450,000 servers worldwide. He is the second most capitalized IT company in the world, after Microsoft. But it’s worth considering that Google makes its money on the Internet.

I also liked the way Google works. It sounds like this: 70-20-10. So,
70 - 70% of the time an employee of the company devotes the main job duties.
20 - 20% of the time is engaged in a project that has good potential and can become one of the official Google services.
10 - 10% of the time you can do at least something: surf the Internet, go for a walk, talk on the phone for personal matters or TAKE INNOVATIVE PROJECTS, which has not yet received either approval or funding from the management.

For example, as a result of 10% of free time at work, the idea of a blog was born, which is very popular in Brazil, and Google, naturally, makes its money from this.

Vladimir also talked about the effectiveness of using advertising. He showed the evolutionary stages:
Media → Outdoor advertising → Radio → Banners → Search advertising → Contextual advertising → Blogs

Google now makes money on contextual advertising, introducing various mechanisms in this technology. “And let Nosik do blogging in SOUP e.”

AdSense is also facing a variety of issues. For example, the problem of localization. Dolgov had a case when an Israeli complained about AdSense, saying that it’s not convenient for you. As it turned out, in Hebrew words are longer than in English. Therefore, the restriction on the number of initial characters does not allow you to effectively place ad headings. Moreover, not the end of the announcement, but the beginning doesn’t fall (Hebrew read = left to right =))

There was also a “support group”, as I called it - guys who laughed at Leonov’s flat jokes. They asked completely idiotic questions. The respondents constantly referred to each other and did not give clear answers.
I liked only the presentation of Google and the competent presentation of the head.

It’s not for me to judge the magnitude of Google’s entry into the Russian market. Noticeable or not. Will they take traffic from Yandex? Or remain at the previous 15%.
At least google spoke Russian in February 2006. This means that the script now understands the cases, endings and other nuances of the Russian language.

Anton Nosik live on RBC (“ In Focus ” program ): “Google has come to Russia ?! Have come? It occupies a room under us in the Smolensky Passage. Google is simply represented in Russia. ”

At the end of the post I would like to play with you. What are the 3 most popular searches on Google:
    1. You’ll never guess for yourself.
    2. A word of 3 letters.
    3. A word of 3 letters.
    Consider the words in English.
