Smartphones from the national OS will appear this year
The basis of the Russian mobile operating system is OS Sailfish.
Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov told last week that the Russian mobile operating system will be developed in Tatarstan Innopolis. Responsible for the development is the company "Open Mobile Platform". Representatives of the company have already said that the domestic mobile platform will be based on Linux. It is also known that the system will be installed on consumer smartphones, not devices for the public sector.
But the domestic mobile OS is not being developed from scratch, the Sailfish OS is taken as the basis, they writeVedomosti. Note that the co-owner of the Open Mobile Platform is an entrepreneur Grigori Berezkin, who is also a co-owner of Jolla, the Finnish company that previously created Sailfish OS. The operating system interface will be translated into Russian, the ecosystem of applications will expand, porting various popular programs. In the area of OS security, there will be practically no improvements.
Interestingly, many representatives of the domestic business do not consider the development of the Russian mobile OS a promising business. For example, Euroset Vice President Viktor Lukanin thinks so. He says that competition in the mobile OS market is already so great, and the consumer will simply not accept the new OS. Representatives of the domestic retail claim that price competition with Chinese manufacturers is impossible, and buyers are already accustomed to the Android OS and the application ecosystem of these devices, therefore, the system competing with Android is unlikely to become popular.
Gleb Mishin, director general of Lenovo’s Russian office, says the company has already discussed a possible partnership with Jolla (recall, this is the company that developed Sailfish OS). But the prospects for this development in the consumer environment simply do not. Lenovo would be interested in this project if the new system were delivered to a separate state market, that is, installed on devices for officials. At the same time, according to Gleb Mishin, public procurement of Android devices for the public sector could be limited.
The competition for the development of the Russian mobile OS last year was won by the company Jolla. The total amount of such a project is about 2.2 billion rubles. The development of a domestic mobile OS is carried out as part of a software import substitution program.
