Twitter will no longer consider links in the limit of 140 characters per message
Plus 23 characters to the text
When Twitter opened in 2006, a 140 character message length limit was extremely unusual. But time has shown: this is exactly what people need. Fast communication in a few words has become the format of effective communication in the new era.
To fit long texts of 140 characters, I had to use all sorts of tricks. Especially for this, link shortening appeared, then this function was implemented directly into Twitter. Users began to publish screenshots of longer texts that do not fit into the draconian limit.
And now Twitter is still making small concessions. The company decided not to take into account in the restrictions on the length of the message links and images. The change will roll out into production over the coming weeks, reportsBloomberg, citing a source who wished to remain anonymous, because the official Twitter solution has not yet been published.
At the moment, links skipped through an automatic abbreviation take up to 23 characters . Thus, the length of the useful text is reduced from 140 to 117 characters.
Initially, a limit of 140 characters ten years ago was formally introduced so that the message would fit into a standard SMS. Now it is no longer relevant. But the frantic rise in the popularity of Twitter is explained not only by the fact that their messages fit into SMS, but by another factor that the creators of the service guessed. Instant broadcast of short messages to a wide audience - exactly what the Internet lacked.
Therefore, even with the departure of SMS as a carrier of information, Twitter does not remove the initial limit of 140 characters, because it is the essence of Twitter.
