VR devices are better for eyes than regular screens.

In this post I will try to prove that the display of virtual reality is more useful than a monitor, tablet or phone for strabismus, myopia and a curve of posture.

On Geektimes there were many posts about the device of the eye and about the work of the human visual system. This article complements this list with a description of our eye problems.

Disclamer / axiom: displays are harmful, because emit their own light, but not reflect. Here are the main enemies for the eyes of the geek: unnatural brightness, the ripple of the backlight and the fact that we forget to blink. But now I will not consider them.

Idea 1. Squint when using VR will be corrected

Squint is most often manifested at the age of 3 years. Medicine knows more than 20 options, but the complication is always the same - the brain “freezes” in the mode when the image from one eye is ignored in order to avoid doubling. (Amblyopia or a lazy eye) Exercises should consciously "connect" the oblique eye and begin to develop muscles and ligaments to align.

The Internet knows many devices for treatment, both effective and working from the Chizhevsky chandelier.

Inside there are 2 separated image channels, where a contrasting object is depicted, for which a healthy and "lazy" eye grasps. It is expected that the end of the session eyes converge along the axis and will look at one point away. Therapy is performed in several sessions.

VR offersaccess to replace complex mechanical equipment. The display will be able to display a contrasting picture, and the cost of Google Cardboard is equal to $ 1 with delivery on Aliexpress. In the next article I will talk about the company that built a successful business on this idea.

Agree that inside this device there are mechanical mirrors, controlled by cables and gears. And in red, I highlighted the incandescent bulb. (these are not even LEDs - this is the Ilyich lamp!)

Modified virtual reality article 2006 in Nature, where the first VR and a program for the treatment of strabismus were assembled.

PS: for more adult cross-eyes I recommend to watch the VR film “Survivor”, created by cameraman Emmanuel Lyubetsky. Each frame has only one contrast object in the center, which is ideal for correcting strabismus.

Idea 2. Myopia

Fact from my life. Before the honey commission somewhere-you-know, I spent the night reading a book, bringing my eyes close to the text.

Of all the muscles of the eye, those designed to stretch the eyeball were developed, so the apparatus for measuring vision showed the result of strong myopia (- 2.0 diopters on one eye and - 1.75 on the other, in addition to mine - 6.0). As a result, I entered the university with a military department, although this is a different story. But for myself, I noted that reading bent over the book was extremely convenient. It seems to me that for the same reason, schoolchildren sit closer to the monitor or hang over the tablets.

imageWhen a user has put on a VR helmet, he is physically unable to stick into the screen. In addition, the effect of “contrasting focusing” works, which is used in 90% of cameras - if the image is not clear, then start “moving the lenses”. This is if I with my -6.0 went out into nature and without glasses tried to understand what was in the distance. After a couple of minutes, I can see at -5.5, because my eyes were constantly trying to focus on the object at infinity.

For our eyes, objects wearing VR glasses seem to be far away.

The scientific community has data on the treatment of myopia (myopia) with VR, but access to the article is not free.

Agree that if the child does not need to bend, then his posture will not suffer from learning.

Therefore, I leave the possibility of correcting posture with VR without explanation. (especially since I have no arguments against the excessive gravity of the helmets and the displaced center of gravity).
