Linux Install Fest - side view
A few days ago in Nizhny Novgorod there was a classic event of the time of the "limit Internet" - Linux Install Fest 05.19 .

This format has long been supported (~ 2005) by NNLUG (a regional group of Linux users).
Today it is no longer customary to copy “from screw to screw” and distribute blanks with fresh distributions. The Internet is accessible to everyone and shines literally from every teapot.
At the same time, the educational component remains relevant. The festival has confirmed its importance this time.
The organizers invited the speakers to talk about any interesting topic from the field of Linux and free software. As a result, the final list covered serious “admin” tasks, graphics, game sector and audio and music applications.
While the speakers registered topics on the NNLUG site , the organizers made announcements, including on Habré . Immediately a task list was compiled in GD, open to anyone who would like to join the preparation.
8 reports, use-demos of fresh Linux distributions, game stands of various calibers and, as it turned out later, the music session in the final.
All this is in the spacious assembly hall of the NTRC with decent acoustics and a tea table in the corner.
Below are the pictures!
Alex was the first to find empty tables and set up a game stand.

The neon glow of not weak iron and gamers are right there.
The gaming series has been strengthened by RetroPie with joysticks (the setup is assembled and tested by Egor).
The problem of launching the SEGA emulator was never solved.

There was a unique representative of the now dissolved project - PocketChip. Local hackers persuaded the owner to give a week for review.
Meanwhile, Sergei and Alex revived the demo machines, which immediately launched the installation of the following Linux distributions:
Ubuntu MATE 18.04.2 on RPi 3 was located a little aside.
One of the participants rightly asked:
It seems that in addition to a motley desktop - different distributions may still have their own, unique philosophy, approaches, configuration and security nuances. Many of the distributions recommended by the NNLUG community had to be postponed for future research.
With a slight delay, the event officially began. Next will be a subjective point of view on the reports. You can fully get acquainted with them in the recording of the 6-hour stream .

Denis talks about an interesting Meshroom package. In short, on the basis of 50-100 photographs of the object from different angles, the program builds a 3D model with a formed texture. The nuances of tuning and the results were demonstrated.

Vladimir added virtual gravity, mentioning Proxmox VE: mainly user cases and general impressions. Releases of this debian-based tool are not frequent, but more special conditions are required for its support and updates.

Innocent told about a good game developing package for children GCompris. The software is affordable for small people from ~ 3 years old and contains different types and types of small games. The game form can additionally stimulate the development of children: broadening their horizons, developing logic, approach to children with autism.
The new version of Blender 2.8, according to Denis (his second report), is more stable than some analogues. Adjustment of functionality. Interface changes.

Artyom Kashkanov ( radiolok ) praises Nextcloud. He says he uses it for a long time and very successfully. It’s a good option to have a local “DropBox analogue”.
Artyom Poptsov ( avvvp) mentioned the great Audacity, introducing a philosophical seed by demonstrating the correct sinusoid. Good package, good compressor, de facto standard for initial sound processing under Linux (my personal opinion).
More details about audio processing were described and demonstrated in the next report by Ilya. He, as a professional musician and composer, successfully used Ubunty Studio in his work. The story touched on the basics of audio systems in Linux and the more specific Supercollider and Pure Data packages.

In the final, Fedor unfolded the paradigm of free software in N dimensions and completely "strained figures from it" without straining. Historical background, facts, comparisons - the report turned out to be insidious criticism of FOSS. The strings of free software proponents were hurt, and gradually the narrative turned into a round table of those who “kept the spark” and really are not indifferent to the situation.

In the installation zone (taking a couple of seats in the last rows), the mini-project “Install FreeDOS on PentiumMMX” began to boil. At the same time, the iron machine had only 20GB IDE HDD, no USB. DVD ROM was not at hand.
The format of the official image of FreeDOS was helped by Ivan.

Then there was a bit of fuss with jumpers. The DIN-detachable keyboard turned out to be inoperative - both Enter keys were not pressed ... The local CADR hacker rescued, on the shelves of which it turned out to be exactly the same working one. True, time was lost and the “testers” achieved only boot from the HDD of the system installer. Quickly figure out how to install the system on the same HDD failed and the project will apparently remain until the next festival.
The event was attended by about a hundred people. Despite the departure from the regulations and technical overlays - people liked it. A reserve was made for a series of more specific events in the formats of “master class” and “seminar” - it’s too early to say details, let’s see if the initiative remains.
About 10 people participated in the organization, coordinated verbally through chat.
7 days were allocated for preparation. The budget is zero. Promotion - posts on 4 specialized resources. Comments on posts can be divided into two classes: “install fest is not relevant” and “it's cool that such events are still being held.”
Information support from www.it52.info was very helpful - a huge respect for the it52-team!
Thanks to the NTRC for the wonderful hall, equipment and support for the event and, separately, respect to the NTRC staff!
Thanks to the speakers and everyone who provided their systems, devices, iron and provided hot tea and cookies!
In preparing the article, textual and photo materials of Innokenty and Poptsov Artyom were used.

- Ubuntu 18.04.2
- Lubuntu 19.04
- Solus 4.0 Budgie
- Astra Linux CE (2.12)
- Alt-Linux. The version is not new, therefore we do not specify.
Ubuntu MATE 18.04.2 on RPi 3 was located a little aside.
One of the participants rightly asked:
Why so many different Linux? The question is correct, I could not find what to answer. I had Debian Lenny running KDE3 on my home machine and it was enough for typical office and multimedia tasks.
It seems that in addition to a motley desktop - different distributions may still have their own, unique philosophy, approaches, configuration and security nuances. Many of the distributions recommended by the NNLUG community had to be postponed for future research.
A few photo screenshots and superficial impressions of distributions - under the spoiler:
Ubuntu 04/18/2. An unsuccessful shot basically reflects my initial impressions of Gnome: a tablet. In principle, it’s not bad if you have the habit of “scattering your eyes” on a bunch of icons.

Lubuntu 04/19. Kuteshno and concise. Perhaps my choice is No. 1 of the candidates.

Solus 4.0 Budgie. Certainly beautiful: translucent windows, grouping by running applications, but a little bit wrong.

Astra Linux CE (2.12). 2nd place in the personal ranking. It was installed the longest since it was expected (due to the size and announcements on the site) that it installed a lot of things. Upon installation, he asked for a complex password and a little later he brought up a list of checkboxes that determine a more formidable level of security. Given the approach to creation - a candidate for a more detailed study in the future.
Alt-linux recalled the distant KDE3. Very simple with specialized software for training.
And among him was basic!
