HandySCAN 3D wins the race for quality

“ Creaform solutions are highly accurate, easy to use and ideal for your production line. We have a ready-made system at hand that provides the necessary flexibility and responsiveness to quickly solve measurement and quality control problems as they arise ”(Jon Gunner, CTO, Koenigsegg).
Koenigsegg cars: Swedish design and bold technical solutions
The Swedish company Koenigsegg Automotive AB is a market leader in the niche of luxury hypercars . Since 1994, she has been developing and manually assembling ultra-modern and high-end cars.
The path traveled by Koenigsegg since its inception is truly unbelievable. It all started on August 12, 1994, when a 22-year-old young man set out to realize his childhood dream. He was pushed forward by passion, ingenuity and unbending will. On this day, Christian von Koenigsegg decided to open his own car company. All circumstances were against him, but at that moment it was necessary to decide: now or never. The idea was to create a sports car that did not exist at that time and which (he was convinced of that) would be in demand. Both of these factors, according to Christian, became the key to success.
The concept was to create a light carwith mid-engine layout and durable removable hardtop. It should also have a windshield that provides all-round visibility and good aerodynamics, short overhangs and two large air intakes for the cooling system on the sides, which will be located behind the center of mass to increase stability at high speeds. The car will look spectacular and will be comfortable both with a raised roof, and in the form of a roadster. The transformation will take a few minutes, while the hard top neatly fits inside the car. According to Christian, the car should have a timeless appearance that, like good wine, would only get better over the years. There were no analogues of the concept of a car with mid-engine layout at that time. So the CC8S model was born.

Each subsequent Koenigsegg model carries this simple and effective proprietary code based on Christian’s original intent.
Then there were five production models and the same number of Guinness records in the category of production cars - Koenigsegg quickly broke into the international arena and was in no hurry to leave it. When asked what he considers to be his greatest achievement, Christian replies without hesitation: “Fulfillment of a dream!”
Measurement Tasks and Equipment
Prior to contacting Creaform, Koenigsegg was able to solve measurement problems with rental equipment. We used a four-meter Romer Arm manipulator with scanning and probing heads or a Leica Tracker in combination with PolyWorks software. Measurement and scanning systems were mainly used for:
- analysis of the root causes of problems on the production line;
- comparison of physical parts with nominal CAD models;
- rigging, commissioning and reverse engineering settings to replace manually-manufactured parts based on CAD data obtained using Catia V5R19 software for tooling and production.
Frequent malfunctions in the rental equipment, significant costs and time constraints, as well as the intention to conduct 3D measurements on their own - all this forced Koenigsegg to start searching for alternative solutions.

“After benchmarking all the available measurement systems, we realized that Creaform's products and solutions best meet our stringent requirements and operating conditions. Less sensitive to movement during scanning and measurement, Creaform solutions are better suited to production line conditions, ”explains Jon Gunner, CTO at Koenigsegg. “We decided to invest in the HandySCAN 3D 3D scanner and the Creaform HandyPROBE portable optical CMM and PolyWorks CAD and CAD software.”
Hand held 3D laser scannersHandySCAN 3D provides an unprecedented level of accuracy and resolution along with a very high measurement speed - all in one portable device. They can be used at all stages of the product life cycle: from concept and development to production, documentation, maintenance and repair.
“Our investment in Creaform solutions was half paid six months after the purchase.”
Jon Gunner, CTO, Koenigsegg
The HandyPROBE handheld CMM-based measuring system, which does not require a manipulator, is an alternative to traditional measuring manipulators. HandyPROBE is a wireless CMM based on the principle of triangulation, which gives complete freedom of movement and can be used for both single and multiple measurements of various parts . Tracking for this CMM is provided by the optical tracker C-Track. The sensors of the C-Track tracker also provide accurate positioning of the HandyPROBE CMM, continuous image acquisition and transmission, as well as data exchange with a computer and saving of sensor parameters.
Both systems benefit from the integration of TRUaccuracy technology, which is characterized by high measurement accuracy during operation in real operating conditions, regardless of vibration, instability or temperature changes in the production environment.
How Creaform's 3D technology helps the car company
The HandySCAN 3D 3D scanner and the HandyPROBE handheld CMM are now used mainly by the Swedish company to control the quality of vehicles , measure components and components and compare them with the CAD model, as well as to identify the root causes of problems, reverse engineering and calibration of equipment. For example, when calibrating tooling, Koenigsegg uses the HandyPROBE system to precisely adjust the nominal coordinates of control points. Then, after fixing the parts in a snap, the operator scans them using a HandySCAN 3D scanner to compare their sizes with CAD model data.

Jon Gunner is pleased with the investment in Creaform systems: "According to my calculations, our investments were half paid off six months after the purchase, given the cost of equipment rental and improving product quality."
