Ultimaker 2+: Apple’s recognition and beautiful implementation of “Ratsukha” from a simple engineer
About the new chips of the latest Ultimaker model and the tale of how the engineer through the forum gained fame and recognition.
Apple has approved Ultimaker as the sole provider of 3D printers in the Apple Online Store. Ultimaker 2+ is now available for purchase at Apple online stores in the UK, Ireland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg
. Ultimaker initially focused on community work. And the Cura editor is open source, and their forum is lively and interesting.
Recently, they announced an upgrade to their Ultimaker 2 and Ultimaker 2 Extended models (which I wrote about earlier) - Ultimaker 2+ and Ultimaker 2+ Extended, respectively.
In 2014, a simple guy on the forum posted his version of the print head for Ultimaker 2, then a dialogue with the community and orders went, and now these are the official accessories of the famous brand. Let's see how the man went to success (900+ discussion posts on the forum, by the way).
The process of unpacking a 3D printer is already described in detail by suppliers.
From the updates:
We upgraded the plastic feed mechanism.
It has become larger and added a button to expand the feed mechanism. Now if the plastic “heals”, then it can be easily pulled out. The feed mechanism works a little louder, but the feed is very smooth.
New airflow system
As an evidence of the usefulness of the innovation - the “ear test”:
Now the robot’s ears are of the same definition. On the previous printer model, the left “ear” of the robot “flowed” a little due to insufficient airflow.
Mobile application for Android and Appstore
The application has instructions, useful tips, answers to questions, as well as the opportunity to find an official representative of the company for technical support.

Olsson block - practical nozzle construction
Olsson block is a hot end with interchangeable nozzles of various diameters. Allows you to quickly change the nozzle. A total of 4 nozzles are included - 0.13 mm, 0.4 mm, 0.6 mm and 0.8 mm. By changing the nozzle you can achieve the best print result for you. The company Ultimaker officially placed Olsson block in the list of its accessories.

"Hi!
I have printed some very abrasive home-made filament lately which eats my expensive UM2 nozzle a bit too quickly ...: shock:
Removing the nozzle also feels like an accident waiting to happen.
I particularly dislike the fixing screw for the sensor and the heater.
In fact, at one of my heater blocks the screw does not even fix the heater.
The heater still stays there since it is pushed in by the cable, but I don't see that as good way of fixing it.
So lately I have been putting some effort in finding a better design.
I looked around for nozzles and the smallest suitable one I found was the E3D-V6.
Based on the design of the original heater block I made a slightly stretched version with a modified way of fixing the heater and the sensor.
Here is the result::
smile:
Some of the dimensions were a bit off and I only just started testing it, but it looks fine so far and I think this could potentially be a way forward. At least for me it would be a major improvement if this works smoothly. ”
The next day I uploaded a more detailed photo
A couple of days later - sketches
A couple more days - a vidos with test print

"The holes on the original and the Olsson block are equally deep, as swordriff says.
The reason why the Olsson block is slightly longer is that there needs to be space for the nozzle-thread. This meant that I had to move the heater and the sensor slightly further away from the filament hole and extend the block a little bit. ” Comments on the developer.
After 1,200 hours of printing, they
offer their own airflow designs.
And the holivar raced . “Import substitution” is said to be not real, and so far it cannot compete with the original in quality.
With a nozzle 0.2, for example, neither in our country nor in China, it has not
worked out yet: You can look at real Ultimaker 2+ in the office of official representatives in Russia .
