Questions about monitors

Hello GT! Today one of my posts was already published , which related to cooling systems, but I would like to complete the 2015th year by answering some interesting questions that were sent to me by mail. They all relate to monitors and / or video performance, so if you are interested in such topics - you are welcome to cat.

Does the “hertz” of the monitor affect the color rendition and characteristics?

I think that 99.9% of GT readers have regular monitors with a refresh rate of 59 or 60 Hz. Reducing it for the sake of tests is also masochism, so I took the AOC G2460pg monitor, X-rite Colormunki Photo spectrophotometer, HCFR universal application tested in one of the 144 Hz posts and performed five measurements at 60, 85, 100, 120 and 144 Hz sweeps . After that, I chose the best result in each group and glued the corresponding gifs, which you can see below. I want to say in advance that I have no idea how it turned out that the 60 Hz version has “broken” color rendering.

In practice, there was no such failure. I have already requested additional information from the guys from Grafitek who provided us with a spectrophotometer, and from the AOC representatives, if something interesting is answered, I will definitely tell you.

So, as you can see, the color rendition from the change of the hertz changes slightly, but the gamma curve and color balance significantly “play” on the graphs. That is, there is a sweep effect on the gamma curve. Such changes should not be, and, as olartamonov rightly noted , is most likely the result of a cheaper construction. However, this will not be noticeable in dynamic games, and 144 Hz are used in them.

There are 4k2k monitors available and what should you expect from such a purchase?

Available 4k2k monitors, of course, are. Open Yandex.Market, select the appropriate settings, sort by price, and see a mountain of models . So, everything is fine, only I would remove 24 inch models from the sample. That's where the budget 4k is definitely not needed, so it's on small diagonals. We leave models from 27 inches :

The cheapest options are with Samsung. Samsung U28E590D is considered to be an “entrance ticket” in 4k. Fast enough for games, after calibration - suitable for working with home photos and videos. It costs from 28 to 30 thousand rubles, depending on the good faith of the supplier at customs.

If the monitor is not taken for the last money, I would recommend spending a few thousand more, but pay attention to the Philips 288P6LJEB . It has excellent color rendering for the TN-matrix (which is confirmed by various reviews , and my own measurements), it’s simply amazing uniformity of illumination and color temperature, and, finally, it is perfectly assembled: a reliable and convenient stand, thoughtful design and nice materials make their .

This Philips has classmates on the same matrix from Innolux: Asus, Dell, Planar and even Samsung. Of all of them, Asus is best suited for high-resolution games, and the rest of the models can be completely ignored: color reproduction, price, uniformity of illumination make them uncompetitive with these two models.

As for the impressions of 4k2k (again, based on the same Philips, which I had for more than a month and a half) ... This is a one-way road. Working with photos and videos has never been so easy and convenient. All details, textures of materials, texture and noise are visible without zoom. In general, when retouching images and portraits, you need to use the approximation much less: you see both the details of the picture and the general view immediately. I have a good friend who half a year ago corrected his vision with a laser. So he said that the effect is about the same: it was also visible before, and as it were clear what you were looking at, and the glasses somehow helped, but now it’s a completely different matter.

Immediately after 4k2k, working with a 2560x1440 monitor is simply uncomfortable. It seems that the picture is blurred. There are simply no image details. All kinds of textures of fabric, skin, hair, all this turns into some kind of strange porridge. My verdict? Masthead, if everything is fine with your eyesight and the hardware / wallet allows you to buy 4k2k. Fortunately, an entrance ticket to the world of high resolution costs from 30-35 thousand rubles.

    How to connect 4k2k monitors?

For 4k2k @ 60 Hz to work properly, you will need the bandwidth of the HDMI 2.0 port or DisplayPort 1.2. I recommend using Display Display because it will work with it ironically. But HDMI (especially for low-cost / little-known brands) can let you know: which decoder was installed, what’s in the brains of this model is a mystery. So either read the reviews, or take the Display Port and not take a steam bath.

HDMI 1.4A allows you to connect a 4k2k monitor to the display, but only at 30 Hz “out of the box”, or how much it can do with a file and such a mother. A custom profile is created, and manual selection is the bandwidth limit of your cable / port on the video card / decoder in the monitor. Some manage to squeeze 45-47 Hz.

DisplayPort 1.2 began to appear in video cards with the Radeon HD6000 and Nvidia 600 series, that is, a long time ago. In laptops - from about the same time. Thunderbolt, aka Lightning - the essence of the same DP 1.2 with buns, is also suitable.

What diagonal for 4k2k to choose?

I would consider options from 27-28 inches to 30-32. The latter, however, cost inhumane money. The difference in the feeling of honey with 27 inches and 30-32 is about the same as between 27 and 22-23 inch "classic" panels. The first hour - God, how huge it is! The second hour - damn it, as I used to live! How convenient and cool everything is! Two weeks later, I saw the old 27 "- your mother, what kind of abrasure is this? How did I work for this ?! The

diagonal" dries out "very quickly. I remember the precipitate that fell when I first saw HTC HD2 with a 4.3" display in 2011 year. I thought that they can kill and bury the corpses without any problems. Then the first Samsung Galaxy Note shocked me. And now 5.5 inches is the most common size, and you can’t even look at HD2 without a smile.

In this case, the choice of diagonal depends not only on the thickness of the wallet, but also on the distance from the eyes to the monitor. On this topic is full of articles, including on the GT met . My table allows me to move the work surface by ~ 75-80 centimeters: my eyes do not get tired, and the sizes of the elements on the monitor are comfortable.

    What do you use yourself?

Now my main monitor is the Philips BDM3270QP based on the 32-inch A-MVA matrix from AU Optronics. The resolution is rather modest, 2560x1440, but the tricky matrix allows the monitor to work both in honest 8-bit mode and in 10-bit with FRC interlacing.

Outwardly, this is a complete 4k2k clone of the Philips 288P6LJEB model , the differences are only in physical dimensions. Menus, settings, stand, ergonomics - coincide completely.

The manufacturer claims up to 300 cd / m 2 brightness, in practice my version gives 356 cd / m 2 . Low threshold - 55 cd / m 2 , which is also good. It is well calibrated out of the box (which, in principle, allows you to "buy and use" without worrying about color calibration), color gamut ~ 97% sRGB.

Considering the fact that there are no two identical monitors, and the settings are in the habit of “floating away” somewhat during operation, such results cannot but rejoice. If anyone is interested to read the full analysis of color analysis - you can see it here. I can only confirm all these words and say that after adjusting the colors, I managed to achieve 99% coverage of sRGB, uniform color temperature and get a good approximation of the gamma curve to the standard.

    Features out of the box

Why am I sitting on it? Because the 32-inch 4k2k did not work. For now.

    The end

That's all. In the European part of Russia, the New Year is coming, and in the Far East already in the whole of 2016, booze and gifts. With the coming, (and someone already with the coming), and let next year in our life you will not have less interesting iron and cool gadgets.

UDP: Thanks to olartamonov for helping to clean up the post. He clarified the meaning of the phrase and corrected the error, so now there will definitely be no discrepancies.
