Elon Musk: robotic electric cars will appear with us in two years

In an interesting interview with Fortune, Elon Musk spoke about his intention to launch robotic electric cars in production. According to the head of Tesla Motors, this will be possible in the next two years. This is quite optimistic even for Musk, especially since in 2014 he expressed the opinion that the mass production of robotic cars would start only in six years (i.e. the forecast was for 2020).

“I think we have all the parts of a whole. It remains only to check what is, put these parts in place and make sure that they work in different conditions - and you're done. This is a much simpler problem than many people think, ”Musk said.

“True, this is not George Hotz (hacker Geohot - approx. Ed.), The problem of one-man-solves-the problem-in-three-months. Rather, it is a problem of a thousand people and two years, ”the businessman continued.

Here, Musk makes a reference to George Hotz, a famous hacker who announced the development of his own car with a robotic control system, much more advanced than that installed in Model S. The news about Hotz appeared in hundreds of media, but Mask could not be surprised.

The head of Tesla Motors said that creating such a system by one person or even a small company is an impossible task. At the same time, he also believes that achieving 99% robotic control system reliability is not so difficult. It is much more difficult to increase this figure to 99.9999%.

Musk also suggested that after 15 years, owning a regular car without a robotic control system will be something like owning a horse these days. And Tesla electric cars, according to him, will become autonomous much faster, not in 15-20 years, but earlier.
