Feel old: the first site in the world is 25 years old

Nowadays Catholic Christmas is celebrated all over the world, then, literally in a week and a half, the New Year is coming. But do not forget about another holiday, or rather, an event that influenced the development of our entire civilization. This is the first site in the world that appeared on December 20, 1990. Its creator is Tim Berners-Lee , who simultaneously published on the website a description of the new World Wide Web technology. Among other information, the author of the site spoke about the principles of installation and operation of servers and browsers.

With the advent of other Internet resources, Tim Berners-Lee began to post links to them on his website. Tim Berners-Lee had the idea of creating hypertext long before the creation of the first site. So, in the 1980s, Enquire hypertext software was created, which used random associations to store data. Already while working at the European Center for Nuclear Research in Geneva (CERN), he suggested publishing hypertext documents, which, for convenience, were linked by hyperlinks. And in May 1991, CERN approved the WWW standard.

Initially, the first sites looked a bit strange (for the modern user). But for that time it was a real breakthrough - after all, information could be accessed from anywhere in the world, and everything was connected with everything. What did company sites look like at the time of launch? Geektimes already somehow published this information . But just in case, we will repeat below.

By the way, Berners-Lee does not rest on his laurels now, but manages the work of the World Wide Web Consortium, the organization he helped create. He opposes government censorship, as well as attempts by telecommunications companies to oppose the principles of network neutrality. As for CERN, this research organization is still dealing with networks. But for the most part, CERN experts do research directly related to the microworld.

As for the Network, it is now continuing to grow. And the documents posted here, the user can view both from the phone and from other devices, including even smart refrigerators. But the principles laid down in the work of the first site remained unchanged.

Here are the promised sites of well-known companies, as they looked during the launch and now.
