A vile trick. Microsoft renamed DiagTrack spyware service and again launched it with all users

Two weeks ago, a large update of Threshold 2 for Windows 10 was released. The elapsed time is enough to thoroughly understand what an update is. On the whole, he was accepted positively: there are clearly more good innovations there than bad ones.

But still, Microsoft has prepared a few tablespoons of tar. Firstly, for some reason, the operating system automatically removes some installed programs on individual computers. Judging by the messages on the forums, among the “victims” are CPU-Z, speccy, 8gadgetpack, Cisco VPN client, SATA, SpyBot, RSAT, F5 VPN, HWMonitor drivers and others. After updating Windows, the program can be installed back without any problems.

Secondly, after updating Windows 10 changes some default settingsback to Microsoft services. Again, then they give the opportunity to return everything back.

Two of the above bugs were caught quickly enough. You can not say about the third, most dirty and even a little vile bug.

But first, a little background. Three weeks ago, Microsoft representatives finally recognized that it is impossible to disable monitoring of system activity and communication with Microsoft servers with standard tools. To do this, go into services.mscand stop the service manually.

By the way, this is at least a weak, but an argument in favor of the plaintiff at the upcoming open trial against Roskomnadzor on December 7. Recall that Roskomnadzor checked Windows 10 and came to the conclusion that the user himself accepts the license agreement and agrees to the collection of data (an official response from Roskomnadzor ). Microsoft admitted that data collection occurs without the knowledge of the user. A key diagnostic service called DiagTrack(seemingly with a built-in keylogger) cannot be disabled. And in the event of a system failure, this information is sent to Microsoft.

Microsoft Vice President Joe Belfiore said the company is listening to users, and if the public considers this a problem, then the operation of a non-disconnectable diagnostic service can be changed.

With the release of Threshold 2, many are imbued with respect for Microsoft. The company really listened to criticism. After the update, the tracking process DiagTrackdisappeared from the list of services. Experts noted this, which was another reason to praise Microsoft for the good work on updating Threshold 2.

Only two weeks later, one of the experts drew attention to the “vile trick”, as he called it. It turns out that the former service has Diagnostics Tracking Service (DiagTrack)not gone anywhere. Microsoft just renamed it a service Connected User Experiences and Telemetry.

Information was confirmed by other sources.

Of course, after renaming the service, user settings became inactive. If you previously stopped the spy service Diagnostics Tracking Service (DiagTrack), then the serviceConnected User Experiences and Telemetrywith the same functionality works as if nothing had happened!

The shutdown method remains the same: go into services.msc, find Connected User Experiences and Telemetryand change the start to Disabled .

But you need to carefully monitor the operating system in the future, checking the settings after each update. Remember that the operating system is not completely under your control - the commands for it come from Redmond along with updates.
