Logitech G27: when you want to drive a sports car. Part 1

Hi Geektimes! Many would like to feel like driving a race car, but not everyone has money for such a handsome man:

    KTM X-BOW Superlight for $ 135,000

Yes, and in order not to put it down in the first turn, you need to practice first. This is what we will do. Today, in the sight of our attention, the reincarnation of one of the best in its segment, according to consumers, Logitech gaming wheels - G25 Racing Wheel . The new model - G27 - inherited a lot from its parent, and at the same time Logitech took into account all the wishes and comments expressed by users regarding the G25, and released virtually the same device, but with thoroughly performed “work on bugs”.

The main differences from its predecessor: a helical steering gear instead of a direct one (the G25 suffered from a lot of noise when cornering), a reinforced central spring in the gearbox, 16 programmable buttons, LED indicators and a pedal tilt adjustment mechanism. It would seem, a set of little things, which of this noise make? Believe me, there is a reason.

The whole device consists of three components - in fact, a steering wheel with a mount for a table, a gearbox and a stand with pedals (since in this case a manual transmission is imitated, there are three pedals).

    Steering wheel

The manufacturer tried to make the manipulator as close as possible to the steering wheel of a real sports car. 28 centimeters in diameter, convenient geometry, rotation angle as much as 900 degrees. The steering wheel is made of stainless steel and covered with high-quality dark leather. It looks simple but attractive.

There are six buttons in the center of the steering wheel around the manufacturer’s logo, and under the thumbs (if you hold the steering wheel “10 and 2”), there are two paddle shifters (by the way, also steel). The buttons are fully programmable, you can assign functions to them using the special Logitech Profile software that comes with the device.

Do not stick your fingers in the steering wheel. Recoil can actually hurt if you walk under a table.

The case is held by 12 screws, 8 of which are located in deep mounting wells, so if you need to disassemble the steering wheel, stock up on a long screwdriver. But otherwise, there will be no problems with disassembling, there are no additional tricky mounts on the case. The steering wheel itself rests on bolts with a hexagonal profile (right in the center, where the horn button is), so you will also need an imbus key (without removing the steering wheel, you won’t open the case).

The inside of the steering wheel looks like this:

Two motors, between which a working microcircuit is fixed - that, in fact, is the whole filling. Everything is fixed quite reliably, but the location of the working microcircuit raises questions. Since the case is made of ordinary, not shockproof, plastic (albeit of high quality), the decision to position the board in this way and not to cover it with additional protection looks strange. However, here everything rests on the “laying between the steering wheel and the seat”, and the user case, by itself - if the user does not treat the steering wheel normally, doesn’t use it as a hammer or to participate in wrestling, everything will be fine. Well, pouring water in it is also not worth it, but, I think, this is already obvious.

Separately, it is worth noting the wires that are well attached to the connectors and reliably soldered to the motors - it feels like a high-quality product in the hands, and not the assembled god who knows where and by whom.

Of course, the differences from the G25 are minimal, but they are. Slightly different materials, shape, paddle shifters. A millimeter here, half a degree there, but in the end - completely different sensations from the product.

    Transmission

The gearbox in the G27 Racing Wheel is the real one, the mechanism there quite effectively copies the same in real cars and is made of metal.

It has 6 speed levels and a reverse gear (also reverse gear is switched on by simply pressing the lever - curtsy towards casual players). In addition to the lever, the device has a top panel, where there are 8 programmable buttons, grouped in 4, as well as a cross-shaped D-pad, similar to a prefix (convenient for working in the games menu). Due to the fact that the device can be fully customized for itself, the G27 Racing Wheel gearbox can be installed both to the left of the steering wheel and to the right, simulating a “right-hand drive”.

The gearshift housing is made of black plastic and has mounts for a table or a Playseat gaming chair, the lever is the same as the steering wheel, steel, equipped with a spring for better bounce to the zero position.

    Pedals

The stand is also designed as close to real car pedals as possible, to the point that each of the three pedals is pressed with a different resistance - the gas is easiest, the brake is more resilient, the grip is soft, but more sensitive than gas. In addition, the gas is located just below the other two pedals. If desired, the distance between the pedals and their angle can be adjusted using screws. The casing of the stand is made of durable plastic, and the pedals themselves are again steel.

The stand can be safely placed even on a slippery floor - the base is designed to prevent any slipping. However, we didn’t forget about the owners of the carpets: if necessary, the “grip” module with the floor rotates and bites predatoryly into the fleece.

Like the rest of the elements of the G27 Racing Wheel, the stand has mounts under the Playseat gaming chair.

    Behind the wheel

In the work of G27, two features can be distinguished. Firstly, if you consider it completely without thinking about the G25 (to admit, this is very difficult, since on the 25th I skated many, many laps along the North Loop) - then the new version seems to be one of the best mass-produced steering wheels. In the sense that the price is exactly what you get. Reliable, convenient, effective tool for victory.

Secondly, if you look at the list of changes, it is clear that in G27 they tried to fix everything that did not suit the players in the previous version. Is the feedback motor working noisily? Here you have new gears. Is the gearshift lever tight? Let's improve it. Few buttons on the steering wheel? Hold four more, now enough.

In general, everything that used to make you think about what to assign to the buttons, and what to throw somewhere far away, whether to play after midnight, or spare the family - was gone. Now you get out of the box a finished and ready-for-use product that has been in beta for many, many years and all the usability schools have been removed. At the same time, unfortunately, there is some “downgrade” in terms of gearbox and its interface - sequential switching has given way to a soft move lever. In principle, duplication may have been superfluous - and so there are paddle shifters working in exactly the same way.

And thirdly, if we consider the G27 as an upgrade or a replacement for the broken G25, then it is worth considering exactly what is written on the lines above. They improved something, corrected a lot, but there is no more sequential mode.

    G27 - almost an iPhone

G25 and G27 wheels have become a kind of “iPhone” from the point of view that quite a lot of all kinds of covers and accessories are produced for them. It's just that this is not about any silicone rubbish with ears, but about real modding things. Formula bagels with a million buttons, instrument panels, ventilation and cooling hands modules, custom steering wheel rims, springs of varying stiffness for the pedal block ...

In general, at the request of "Logitech G25 modding" and "Logitech G27 modding" you can find a bunch of everything. How to do where to buy it, what to do for this ...

As a result, you can get a very, very decent imitation of a real racing cockpit.

Well, or the steering wheel of a retro sports car. Well, or something else.

By the way, returning to the question of what was taken away from us in the new version of the steering wheel. Assign the “switch up / down” command to the 3rd and 4th gears, take the gum and do it like this:

Who wanted the sequencer there? :)

    Preliminary Results

The first acquaintance with the Logitech G27 Racing Wheel satisfied me. First of all, I was pleased that in our age of rampant savings on everything, the build quality has not deteriorated, and the materials, as were above all expectations, have remained, this cannot be taken away. Without tests in specific games, everything is also good - the steering wheel sits quite comfortably in hands, bounces well to the zero position, the response of the pedals is felt with a bang. The speed lever is also not satisfactory. Separately, I want to note that everything is fixed / fixed on surfaces without problems, and there is so much margin for “thickness” in the mounts that even the thickest countertop will be securely clamped.

That's all for now, in a couple of days we will get acquainted in detail with the features of the G27 in such hardcore simulators as Project CARS, we will understand the abundance of settings and talk about whether you can really get used to driving while sitting in front of the monitor. To the connection!
