Corning develops ultra-secure glass for screens of smartphones and tablets

A few months ago, Corning introduced a new generation of tempered glass Gorilla Glass. This glass, according to company representatives, protects the smartphone screen from falls and other incidents better than all other options. Currently, Gorilla Glass 4 is already used in smartphones of some manufacturers. However, the company is already working on the next generation of glass, called Project Phire .

The developers claim that this glass is close to sapphire in terms of scratch resistance. According to the president of the company, the previous generation of glass, Gorilla Glass 4, is resistant to drops, but not very scratch resistant. Sapphire crystal is much more resistant to scratches than to drops. The idea of the new project is to make the glass resistant to both drops and scratches.

Now the company hopes that the project will be successfully implemented, and leading manufacturers of gadgets, including Apple and Samsung, will use the development for their smartphones and tablets. Corning is very interested in the successful development of the new material, since Apple has previously announced that it is going to switch from using Gorilla Glass to artificial sapphire. So far this has not happened, although Apple was going to install sapphire crystal for iPhone 6 and 6 plus, but it may well happen in the future. Most likely, in some models of Apple Watch it will be used sapphire crystal instead of Gorilla Glass.

In addition, Project Phire can help Corning enter the smartwatch market, as manufacturers of such devices are interested in the maximum protection of the gadget. Now representatives of the company are actively working with manufacturers of gadgets, explaining that sapphire crystal is scratch-resistant, but does not tolerate bumps and drops. If the company succeeds in proving its point of view, plus the release of Project Phire, this may be a new round in the development of Corning.
